I lived with 2 roommates, but my name was on the Dish Network account. I was moving out in June of 2006 to get married. I called Customer Service and told him I was moving out and I did not want to be on the account any longer. I was told my name was completely removed from the account and that it was now under my roommates name.

Now here I am a year and a half later with a letter from a collection agency stating that I owe $487.00 to Dish Network. WHAT!?!?

First of all, why are they even trying to collect from me when my name was supposedly taken completely off the account. Secondly, this is the first I've heard of it so why did it go directly to collections before they called to get it resolved.

So I call Dish Network to politely explain that they need to get a hold of my old roommate who took over the account to try to collect on this balance. I get put on hold and another agent gets on the line. I go through the WHOLE story with them and get put of hold again. The timer on my phone says 21 minutes so far... Finally a VERY rude gentleman picks up the line and tells me he is an account manager and can make any decisions on the account for me. So I go through the whole situation one more time with him and after he called me a liar saying that I didn't call Dish Network, his response to me was that in the end I signed a contract so I am responsible for the balance. I then proceed to explain to him that back in June of 2006 I spoke with a gentleman and told him to take me off the account. The CSR tells me that no one signed a new contract so I am still responsible for it. This I understand, a new contract should have been signed. BUT, why is it my fault that no one asked for my roommate to sign a new contract. I explained to him that it was their mistake to not have had a new contract signed not mine. And also that I was told my name was taken off the account completely. He told me that it was not possible to even do that, so the CSR would have never said that, once again saying that I was lying. I told him that the person I spoke with back in 2006 must not have known what they were doing and that it is not my fault that no one signed a new contract.

After we argued for over and hour, the only thing he would say to me was that I signed a contract and so I have to pay. He didn't care that they lied to us, and that they made the mistake of not getting a new contract signed.

Dish Network has the WORST customer service I have ever encountered.

Why do you think...?

Why do you think Dish Network asks for certain information, such as your social security number, when you agree to services? If you are in a contract, the SSN given is to make sure we can send your account to collections if you default on that contract. They probably did send you notice, but since you were not living at the service or billing address, you did not receive that notice. If I were you, I'd be going after your old roommates for the balance, since when you left there the account was current.
