I should have checked the internet before hiring this contractor.  He was on a recommended list from my realtor so....well the rest is history.

He low balled the job, got in over his head and now we have a home that is fair from complete.  We have not moved in and today we are busy canceling the movers, contacting the apartment complex, etc.  Yes we had a tight timeline and considering he didn't really get started to almost 2 weeks after we signed, we should have seen the outcome.

The first clue came when no one showed up the first day.  I waited at the house for several hours and called DJ several times.  He never returned my calls.  My husband tried too.  I sent him an Email cancelling the contract, well that got his attention and all of sudden, the master bath counters were ripped out by the time I got there the next day.  I should have paid him and moved on.

The second clue should have been the single handyman who was the demo guy.  Nice guy but threw everything on the carpets (which was not being replaced).  I complained but each time there was more dirt and demo stuff on the carpet until I really got firm.  We have had several remodel jobs and each one put protection throughout the whole house so the work boots would not track in dirt and mud.  DJ finally took the carpet that was removed from the study and dining room and put that down.  They still put stuff on the carpet, front door, tools, etc.

Next he tried to change material and items for lesser quality.  First it was the fireplace, then the paint choice.  We insisted that he fulfill the contract and he relented.  But it was always a fight to get him to give us what we contracted for.

We had a clog drain in the master bath, his "change order" charge...$800 to fix the drain.  I got a plumber over there to fix that and some other outside work for $149.   The next item  was the brand of paint, they came with Sherwin Williams paint instead of the Benjamin Moore paint that was spelled out in the contract. A mistake on my part with paint number for color.  I had wrote the wrong paint choice down.  My mistake.  They had already painted 3 rooms when this was caught.  DJ couldn't have been happier...new "Change order" bill, $3800.  Quote from outside painter, $1400.

When removing the carpet he broke tiles in several places while working.  Now we cannot match the tile.  All the time Nick his foreman said, "don't worry about it."  Now we cannot match tile around the dining room and some additional other places that are in high traffic areas.  We might have to replace the whole house.

They delivered the granite for the master bath.  I loved it.  We were providing the faucets.  Nick called me the minute they were delivering the granite and said, "where are the faucets".  I told him we had picked them out but had not purchased.  He wanted to know how to drill the holes.  I told him they would have to come back to drill as I had no clue on the size.   They went ahead and drilled the holes...wrong.  Then Nick tried to tell me that I had approved the 4 inch holes, etc.  Luckily my realtor had heard me tell them to wait and I really was confident that I had never agreed for them to drill the holes.  They finally agreed to re-order the granite.  All the time trying to make it like they were so nice to do this for us.  The good news is it does match although not as pretty of as the first piece but acceptable.  On the other hand the mirrors are not right.  2 out of 3 have gaps to the ceiling.  Not their fault, ceiling's fault.

The other night I came in to find that the foreman and handyman painting our bedroom along with some other rooms.  We contracted for professional painters and this is what they delivered.  Yes they were other painters there but the job is far from complete.

DJ kept telling up until 11/18 that all work would be completed as scheduled for 11/20 move in date.  It's 11/20 and the cabinets have not been painted, trim work is far from finished, at least 5-6 days of painting, fireplace is 1/2 finished, mirrors don't fit in bath, shower door not replaced, windows not replaced, etc.  Last night was the final straw as he told my husband that we were to only deal with his foreman not DJ because we were questioning him and what he told us 2 days before.

As of this morning, he and his "crew" are off the job.  We have contacted our lawyer.  I have completed a report for BBB and will contact the Coldwell Banker realtor to have him remove from the "preferred" vendor list.

What a shame to have this man trying to pass as a professional, honest contractor.  I should have listened to my gut which told me to pass on this one!!
