Well where do I start with this company? I am a former store manager who came up through the ranks rather quickly from hard work and determination probably not as quick as other store managers in my former district due to the fact that those managers had ties with the district manager from their days of working together at sweetbay. I found that these managers as well as a few others were receiving special treatment because they either worked with the DM before at another company or they did special favors outside of work to help speed a long a certain situation the DM had going on at the time.

This DM was a ral character, he would walk in to the highest percentage stores and rip them apart to the point of tears because the store was not like his favorite store in Clearwater even though that high percentage store was making twice the amount of money with less payroll than the other. He would constantly say to worry about was goes on in your four walls and stop worrying about what goes on in other stores but yet he would say that every store was the same and would constantly compare stores even though the stores were in completly different demographics.

He always wanted consistancy with his store managers but when it came to the following the company policy of every store manager closing two nights a week some got away with not closing at all and they were told to put it on the schedule to show that they are closing but they dont have to. What seems funny to me is that i was fired for falsifying documents because we were taking the night deposit in the morning instead of night but by force of habit were writing down that we took them at night. I feel that my stupid force of habit and him telling to make it look like they are closing on their schedule is about the same but yet he still has a job.

This DM once told a group of employees that if he could pay them for what they were worth it would be pennies. I was constantly told that he was going to take me outside and beat me for not following his directions.

Dollar tree has a procedure that requires you to micromanage your day to day and you are to plan for your next week every friday, even though mondays conference call comes and your whole week gets ruined kind of pointless planning on friday. Their other "great" idea is to write the same thing on three seperate pieces of paper so that everyone is accountable. If these papers are not filled out in detail and not followed you will be writen up. All of this is a complete waste of time and money in my eyes.

When it comes to payroll, this company is horrible. Numerous times we were told to cut our hours or save our hours so other stores either in the district or on the other side of the state could use them, wich again is against company policy. Policy states that all hours are to be used for your store so that business will grow. I believe that policy is good unless your the RD or the DM trying to keep your pockets fat.

If you are a store manager expect to work 50-80 hours a week due to the fact of lack of payroll. In the smaller stores like mine expect to work an open to close every week and put in on average 60-80 hours a week. The hours didnt really bother me it was the simple fact that it was never good enough, never compensated for and i was referred to as "free help" on numerous occasions. Now some store managers in the clearwater/largo area only put in 40-45 hours a week and they are paid very well because of the special treatment they get.

In closing i would say stay away from this company unless of course you want to drive an hour, work 80+ hours a week, and have a tirant as a boss for $35000 a year. In the end you'll get replaced for somebody that has worked with the DM before and lose all your benefits, your 2 weeks paid vacation that you earned GONE, your bonus from the previous month that you earned while employed there GONE!

RE: Florida Dollar Tree DM

To the employee with the abusive DM at Dollar Tree in the Tampa Bay area:

I am VERY familiar with this District Manager, my wife having also worked under the "man" (and I use that term loosely.)  This man REFUSES to get his hands dirty, and his attitude is symptomatic of the Sweetbay/Kash N Karry culture he came from (and the reason this chain ended up circling the drain and being shuttered after Winn-Dixie bought it out).  I have ZERO RESPECT for this person, and if I wasn't concerned for my wife losing her job, I would post his name here since I know WHO he is.

He has backstabbed MULTIPLE EMPLOYEES, had stores taken away and given back and, from what my sources within DT told me, was running for cover when his RD transferred out of state and a new RD came to town.  This man is a cockroach - he will survive because he knows who to suck up to, and will continue to do that because he is a social darwinist.  I can assure you of this - there will come a day when it all catches up to him, and he will have to face the mighty hand of karma.

As I am an X-ASM with Dollar Tree. I reported many times the SM in Laplace, La. for showing up late for his scheduled times. Sometimes even getting to drunk the night before he was scheduled to open. Like on more than one occasion he showed up late to open the store. Upto 1 1/2 hours late.

Then he reported that he showed up on time and blamed the cashier whom had sat in the parking lot for 1 1/2 hours waiting for him to show up. By stating that he was there and could not open the store without a cashier. But he gets paid for this kind of payrole manipulation, by just entering whatever hours he was supossed to be there into the computer like he was there.

He also states almost daily that this is his store and he runs it the way he see's fit. So whatever the DM or above tells him he just does whatever he wants. He never approved of my ASM possition as he felt threatened by me. Due to the fact that I was not scared to speak up and report him.

But, when you report anything to the DM and Human Resources they just blow you and your complaint off like it is ok for payrole manipulation to go on.  Dollar Tree is the mot poorly ran companies I have ever had to work for. You know he refused to unlock the restroom one day because he was sitting in the office eating his second lunch, and had a customer have an accident on them selves by the register. But then had the nerve to accuse me off not unlocking the restroom when I was OFF THE CLOCK for my lunch break outside the store. But YES he was on the clock!!!

I went thru a similiar situation w/DT - first worked for them ten years ago and then six years ago. The second time, I was a full-time Assistant Manager under the 'leadership' of a Manager who was openly having an affair with a married cashier. This Manager was the single laziest human being I'd ever encountered - sales were terrible, the store a mess, but the DM could have cared less. I was seven months pregnant (I'm 5'1" and 100lbs), unloading trucks and putting out more freight in a day than he did in a week. Doctor took me out on medical for the last six weeks b/c of a kidney issue - hmmm, I only stood for five hours on register while my 'Manager' never allowed me a break. I was told I could either go back to 'being a cashier for $7 an hour' or I could 'essentially be out of a job'/Administrative Discharge. I said screw this, went to the Human Rights Commission and sued. It took two years but I won and had my settlement from DT. Interestingly, I learned that DT has a consistent history of doing just this to their female employees who are taken out on a pregnancy disability. I lost all of my earned vacation and sick time, which I fought for, but in the bigger picture, that had to admit their guilt and pay. This is the WORST COMPANY EVER and the things I saw take place in the course of four years would make your stomach turn. There's a LOT MORE than just that story.

SUE ** SUE ** SUE ** and don't give up!
