If I was you I would take my $4000.00 and buy a good used car outright. Find someone on hard times. Last time I went to a dealership was a few years back and I was very inexperienced in dealing with a dealer. I was looking for a used car and they told me on the phone that they had such a car as I was looking for. A Ford Taurus. I had $2000.00 on me and I went down by myself. I knew my credit was good and the salesman had agreed to accept $1000 down. Well, I got to talking when I was sitting in front of him and mentioned "Yeah, I have two grand on me so at least I'll still have another grand". He said "Hold on" and went to the back. He stayed in the back a long time and when he came out he said "Well, we had a problem with your credit and the finance company won't sign on the loan until we have at least $2000.00 down". Yeah, I should have known better but I was tired, had taken a day off of work and was ready to get the car. So I said ok.
I went to the back and spoke to the Finance Manager who was the size of five bulldozers. Looked like he had eaten half the state. This was at a major Ford Dealership and I just knew he was a professional and wouldn't lie to me. Well, he DID lie to me. When I asked him about my credit he said "well, we found something several years ago and that was a red flag to the finance company".
I was also shocked when I saw my interest rate. It was very high. But I signed and left. A few days later something told me to contact the finance company. I contacted the finance company and asked them what interest rate did they show for me. I don't know what made me ask those folks that. Something did. They repeatedly for some reason refused to tell me and kept deferring me back to my paperwork or the dealership. Finally I reached a woman who told me the finance rate they had for me and it was several percentage points LOWER than that which I had signed for. I then asked her about my down payment and she told me that they had nothing to do with the down payment and that the dealership handles that and that the downpayment goes directly to the dealership.
The Finance manager had lied to me. I called back up to his dealership and spoke to him and he told me that that is how they make their money which is by finding people who need loans and by upping the interest rate where they get kickbacks.
I learned something. God was with me though. Not long after I wrecked the car and was out of the loan. I will NEVER purchase a car from anyone else.
And as fate would have it I am in the process of now becoming a dealer myself. I've applied for the license and will soon take the class and get my dealers license. I can't wait. And I promise to NEVER be a shady, underhanded, CROOKED dealer like the majority of those that exist out there today.
Thanks for putting out this report letting others know to avoid this dealership!
