Earthlink is using the cheapest kind of business tactics to avoid losing customers. They currently will not allow customers to cancel via email or through the website, only by telephone or certified letter. I called Earthlink to cancel, and were told that computers were down, and to call back in 24 hours. I called back again in 24 hours, and were given another bogus excuse about a storm causing more computer problems.

On both occasions, I asked the representative if I could simply give my account information over the phone, so it could be written down and acted upon when the computers were back up, and on both occasions this solution was rejected. It was obvious that Earthlink was making it exceedingly difficult to cancel service.

Not surprisingly, placing my original order for service was simple, and accomplished online! This company has gone steadily downhill since being merged, and the service level has gone from outstanding to atrocious. I will succeed in cancelling my service eventually, and will never use this company again.

Trying to cancel will cost you I would imagine as they have your credit/debit info.. what you could try is to stop paying them by getting a new bank account if debit, and new credit card if credit and cancelling the old.. Once they notice they cannot not take out payment, they will for sure stop your service and contact you about the situation. Then explain your ordeal, and I am sure that they will completly cancel your service then.. I have had companies give me the run around, not wanting to cancel my service before, and I find this to be the best way to get their attention.. and dont worry about your credit,as mine is still in mint condition..as long as you make it clear that you wanted to cancel and they kept giving you runnaround, you should be fine.. But keep in mind that just because it works for me doesnt make it the best thing to do. Anyway.. lots of luck.. have a nice day
