Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

This company has developed quite a reputation for dishonest work practices pertaining specifically to Gas/Propane delivery. A group of us have decided to form together and expose the company for it's shady practices. We were shocked to learn that though there were many complaints by word of mouth no one has yet posted anything on the web to fore warn others. If I can save some frustration and money then I will attempt to do so.
The first and most common complaint you will hear is billing.
Eastern Propane does not bother to give you a normal receipt for a delivery. It is usually chicken scratches that mean very little. Considering the price of propane (around $300-$600 a delivery) you would think a little more effort would be taken when producing a customer a receipt.

The reason the receipt needs to be more professional is because of the mystery billing...
Suddenly a bill comes in the mail from Eastern Propane. You open it and find a $500 charge for a "automatic delivery". You realize you have just had your tanks filled 2 weeks ago and have paid $600. You call Eastern and ask what happened. They simply state they did an automatic delivery (curiously some of us are never home) and the delivery equaled X amount of fuel. You can dispute it with them however, the bottom line is if you don't pay the bill your heat will be shut off. This happened to me once, and not only did they shut my propane off but my neighbor saw them draining my hot water as well using the valve...
I called and paid immediately and was shocked at how ruthless they could be. I had 2 children both under the age of two...
I asked if they could check for leaks because 16o gallons of propane should have lasted more then 3 weeks in a 1100 square foot home. Mysteriously, there were no leaks. My heat was set at 72.

In my experience this was a little excessive and after talking to other customers I realized they too had asked to have their tanks or lines checked for leaks. I chuckle now more in disbelief then anything at how devious they were putting on a show to "check my tank"
Stay away, stay away, stay away, from these guys. There are plenty of Vendors in Southern Maine and NH to do business with regarding fuel. I hope this fore warns anyone thinking of using them and saves you money this upcoming winter.

Propane companies uncaring.......EnergyNorth shut our gas off

#2Consumer Comment

Wed, December 09, 2009

I hear you about Eastern Propane.  my complaint is with EnergyNorth who claim to care about their customers on their web site.  We owed a balance in April of $1355 which we were unable to pay all at once due to other obligations like my mortgage, so the gas was shut off 4/29/09.

On top of this amount, they wanted $1000 deposit.  Over the summer I managed to pay them $1020 and last month my elderly mother lent us $1000 so that we could get the gas bill paid with me kicking in the rest of the balance of $335.   After sending the $1000, my husband called to see if they got it and what the balance was.  They said we still owed $875.

We were told all summer by the credit dept of EnergyNorth that we needed $2355 to get the gas back on. It is now December 8 and we have no heat.  We have done without gas for hot water and cooking since April, but now it is December in NH and we have no heat.   They don't care.  They just keep saying to pay the $875.

I asked for an explanation and all they did was show me a balance due at the time of shut off for $1775.  I have a statement from June showing a balance of $1355.   I then asked for statements going back to September 2008 and they have not responded as of today, although they did respond to my first request right away.   They are ignoring us now or maybe they discovered an error in billing on their part and don't want to send me the information.    I don't know and don't care, my house was 40 degrees this morning.  My husband had a brain tumor and is on disability and I work full time in order for us to scrape by.   At least I can be in a warm office building 8 hours a day during the week.

The PUC in NH does not regulate propane.   I was told by the PUC to contact the AG office/Consumer Protection Agency, which I just did today by faxing them a complaint form.

Back in April, when speaking to customer service at EnergyNorth, I was asked if I had any money at that time to pay the bill.  I told them no, because I needed to pay my mortgage.   I was transferred to the credit department and the first thing this smart mouthed man asked me is if I had any money.   I said "no, that's why I was transferred to you!".  He then says nastily, "well if you don't have any money, how do you expect me to help you?".   which I responded, "I guess you can't, thanks for nothing" and hung up.  That's caring about your customers?  We have been a customer of EnergyNorth for the 28 years we have been in this house.
