I worked at EcoReco Scooters in Campbell, California, starting as a contract-to-hire employee. The CEO offered me a salary, gave me a company e-mail, made me admin of the company's Facebook page and introduced me to the team as the new CMO. When I decided to leave the company, Jay Sung, the company's CEO sent me threatening, hateful e-mails and told me he wasn't going to pay me because I was never an official employee of the company, which was obviously a lie. He then sent me hateful e-mails, telling me I had no legal rights towards the money the company owed me because I was never an employee even though I had documented proof of both an offer and start date and worked at the company in the capacity that I was hired under.

For some reason the CEO believes he can refuse to pay contractors if they don't live and die by his beliefs and that threatening to not pay employees/contractors for the work they do with EcoReco is perfectly acceptable. He believes that saving that money will make his company successful in the long run and that ripping-off contractors will drive his company to the next level.
