I rented a car in Jan 2011 while visiting Florida on vacation. While it was in my posession, a small (1/2" dia) tree branch fell and dented the top of the driver's side rear quarter panel. It was a dent about 1.5 - 2" long and probably about 1/8" deep. There was no paint damage, and it was something that the Dent Wizard / Dent Doctor could easily fix for $100-200.

Being an honest person, I told the rental rep about the damage when I turned in the car so that they could start a report and fix it. I have a CC with rental protection, so I expected that it would be fairly easy to get fixed / resolved. I contacted the CC company and my insurance company and started the process on that end.

From the start, Enterprise would not send and of the paperwork required by the CC company - and their "customer care" people just kept giving me the run around. I chased them for 4 months trying to get them to send it, with no response (they kept blaming it on the local agent). In subsequent conversations with the CC / insurance companies, they suspected that no claim would come.

Fast forward to yesterday - Feb 3, 2012. I get a letter from Enterprise demanding payment. The copy of the claim they sent shows that an estimate was done on 12/30/11 - more than 11 months after the car was returned. Furthermore, the "repairs" that they are trying to collect had nothing to do with the actual damage. They are trying to collect for a replaced bumper cover on the rear of the car - 3 feet away from where the actual damage occurred.

I called their damage recovery number (the ones that had been giving me the run around) and told them that they are making an incorrect claim. The person I spoke with transferred me to my "claim rep" who was conveniently on vacation. I called back and talked to another rep (who was no more helpful than the first) and told them I wasn't paying anything until they straighten it out.

Because Enterprise waited over a year to send me anything, the CC is now saying they won't cover their portion, even though they agree that I made an effort to get the info they needed. Turns out they never did any work to follow up with Enterprise, and I'm expecting that Enterprise probably never tried to contact them either....

This all seems just too convenient, that they "process" the claim and send notification just after the co-insurance claim period expires (1 year). I'm going to send the info I received yesterday to the CC company and my insurance company, so we'll see what happens. I can guarantee that I will never rent from Enterprise again, and I will fight this. I'm also going to look into other remedies, such as the BBB, State Attorney General(s). They also may have an insurance / mail fraud charge coming their way.

Don't get me wrong, I'm willing to pay for the damages that actually happened (if they were ever actually repaired), but I will never pay for something I didn't do. Looking at other reports on this website, I'm not the only one they have pulled false / inaccurate claims on.

At no time in my post did I say the scratches, or anything else happened to me. The local people did try to claim some damage on a car I rented years ago. After a word of prayer, all of a sudden, the damage just sort of disappeared. And I haven't rented a car from that company since. Nor will I.

#3UPDATE EX-employee responds

Mon, February 20, 2012

1) I clearly stated I was an EX employee.
2) Not once was I acting as an "apologist" for ERAC.  I was blaming the field because they are the ones who send the bad information to vehicle repair and yes.....yes it is something that goes on in most offices.  It's not splitting the atom.  It's passing off previous damage on a rental car to a customer to avoid it effecting your bonus.

If the vehicle repair department (VRD) only has false information to go off of then whose fault is that?  The people providing said false information or........wait for it........the field.  Right?  I can agree that the tact and attitude of the VRD is less than professional.....and that is on them.  But the "accident information", the previous contracts showing if the damage was already present, the check in and return walk around of the vehicle and the $ lost if the damage is not attached to a renter is all the responsibility of or it effects the bottom line of the rental branch.

As for the employee finding scratches under the front bumper there are several scenarios for that.  Some are them trying to blame you and pass off the damage and some are inconsistent check ins.  When inspecting the vehicles the employees are supposed to start at the trunk with it open and look for a spare.  Then step back and crouch down to check the underside of the rear bumper.  Then they are supposed to look at the four corners from an angle to look for dings and dents, check for chipped paint, scratches etc.  You do this the whole way around the car then shut the trunk showing you went around.

In your case it was either 1) 1st person who checked you in did not do the proper inspection and the second person did upon return "finding" damage 2) they planned this from the beginning and had some kind of note or flag that showed when you returned to blame you for the damage 3) you scraped the car on a parking hump or something and may not have noticed.  I wasn't there so I don't know but either way in two out of three situations it's due to the office.

Indeed.  There are just too many instances of exactly the same thing happening all over the country with customers of "Criminal Enterprise".  In my opinion, anyone who rents from these buzzards is just asking for trouble.

This is to Double Zero, Criminal Enterprise's apologist, who wants us to believe this is just something that happened or happens in the field. Sport, there are over 200 hundred complaints on this one website about the way your "company" has tried to EXTORT money from people all over the country. Don't try to tell me that this is just happening in the field. So you're saying that the workers in the CA stores and the workers in the FL stores and the workers in the SC stores and all the others just all came up with same idea. How about the employee who waited til the renter was standing at the back of the car and  bent down and just happened to find a couple of scratches UNDER the front bumper. Horse puckey. My BS meter d**n near exploded on that one.

Got a letter from the Enterprise claims company today. Appears that they have closed the claim and I'm not going to have to pay anything. Definitely a good ending to the week....

Not sure exactly what happened, but I suspect that my conversation with my insurance company got them asking the right questions to Enterprise. Regardless, it's over - but I still don't plan to use Enterprise going forward.

Maybe they have more than one person monitoring their online presence and complaints so they can get back to consumers faster.  Ever think of that?

As an ex-employee however I can tell you that the problem is more in the field than in the corporate offices.  Branches will write the reports but then rent the cars again in order to meet the expectation of reservations.  It's usually based on the amount of damage.

In the end it's poor work in the field that screws the renters.  Reps miss damage and the branch managers attempt to package it in with customer damage in the hopes that the insurance company will pay it off and the damage doesn't effect their bottom line.  Blame the field.  Trust me.  The folks in Vehicle Repair are constantly coming down on them but since the field makes the $$ they usually win out.

VERONICA !!!!   What happened to "Genelle" ???  And what about that other dude who was here for about 2 days ??  Wow....Enterprise certainly appears to be going through a lot of people.  I guess they all got tired of feeding the same lies to the innocent people who "CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE" was ripping off with their "damage scam".....you know.....the one where some sort of damage suddenly appears on a rental car days or weeks after it was returned ?????

Now I wonder how long "Veronica" will last before SHE discovers the 1.5 million people who have lodged this same complaint on the web ??  That is unless, of course, "Veronica" is simply another pseudonym for a computer generated response......

Let your insurance people handles this mess. That's what you pay them for. I guarantee you they have been through this many times before. If there's any fraud on Enterprises part the insurance investigator wil sniff it out. Insurance fraud is a felony in most states. The Enterprise employee(s) who reported the bogus damages will be the one to take the fall.
