I rented a car from Enterprise-Rent-A-Car after reading, ironically enough, about their high ratings for costumer service. I usually rent from a cut rate company (with which I have had no problems like this) but decided to switch based on the ratings. (The obvious lesson here being; if it's not broken, don't fix it.) I returned the vehicle in exactly the same condition as when initially rented and the Enterprise employee that checked the vehicle in saw no irregularities.

Several days after returning the vehicle, I received the infamous cryptic letter from Damage Recovery Unit, PO Box, 842264 Dallas Texas 752842-264 that others have reported. The letter contained a claim number in reference to the "damage or loss to the vehicle you rented." The letter did not contain any description of the supposed damage or any type of estimate of the costs.

My initial reaction was that this was not a legitimate letter from Enterprise Rent-A-Car and was some type of scam due to the letter's cryptic nature and lack of specific information about the supposed damage to the vehicle. After investigating the Damage Recovery Unit, it turns out that it is also represents several other rental car companies and that there have been a number of complaints about their business practices.

I called the number in the letter: 866-300-3239, FAX 918-948-6635. My major question was in reference to what the supposed damage was. The representative said that that the damage was due to hail strikes to the roof and trunk of the vehicle. I then asked what the costs for this supposed damage would be. The response was that they did not have an estimate yet and would get back to me in 7 to 10 days.

I disputed the supposed damages to the vehicle. There WAS a major storm in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area the night before I returned the vehicle. However, the car was parked under a COVERED parking space and was not struck by any hail. In my opinion, I would hypothesize that the renters of other vehicles  returned the day after major storms--who did not purchase insurance through Enterprise--receive similar letters whether they were actually exposed to hail or not.

Needless to say, I will not be renting any more cars from Enterprise Rent-a-Car or the other companies represented by the Damage Recovery Unit, PO Box 842264, Dallas TX 75284 and will also advise others to do likewise. I will also extensively document the condition of all cars that I rent upon their return as the consumer is basically at the mercy of the company in this situation.
