Scott I had the same problem as you describe on my 2002 Chev 1/2 4X4. The problem was the alternator. Apparently there is some interference from it causing the pressure regulator in the teansmission to go into a fit at certain charge positions. The cure is to add a wire and a connector on the alternator. There is a service bulletin to cover the repair and if i recall requires .7 hours to comnplete. Mine works fine now.

I know just what you are going through. You are not alone as I have been polled by MANY truck owners, when they see mine, and asked what I have to say. The common link is this trans shift clunk and erratic hard shift. None of these owners are happy at all. GM is aware of it too, service bulletin # 01-07-30-042B dated JAN 04 A/T - 4L60-E/4L65-E," 2-3/3-2 Shift Clunk Explanation " Among other bulletins released to hide the true nature of the clunk from the consumer ie; rear end , start stop driveline noise from gear lash, drive shaft noise, among others which were actually trans noises but the unwitting owner simply isn't knowlegable enough to deny or contest. I have a 2003 truck with that same trans. It self destructed at 3000 miles and was never repaired properly. I now see why, it can't be. I was told by the dealer "it's a truck, not a car and if they make noise too bad they aren't made to be used like a car" That was testimony in a lemon law mediation suit ! Your best bet, never buy another GM vehicle. Their record of dealing with consumers shows just what you mean to them, considering the length of time this trans has been in use and the number of complaints about it.

My problem may be of the same nature. I have a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado and it is shifting hard, mainly between 1st and 2nd, but it can be felt between 2nd and 3rd. The problem doesn't happen all the time, it takes appox. 45 minutes to an hour of driving before it starts doing this. If I shut off the truck and let it sit for 10 seconds, then restart it, the problem goes away for another 30-45 minutes of driving. I've already taken it to a "Professional" transmission shop and they told me that it needed to be re-built, $1600 dollars later, and it's still doing the same thing. I've taken it back to them multiple times and they can't find anything wrong with it. I have even purposely drove it for over and hour and made it start shifting hard, before I took it too them. I then had a technician get in with me so that he could feel it. However, the first thing that they did was drive it onto the rack and turn it off, which of course reset it. Then they call me and told me that they fixed it, which of course they didn't.
