I joined Gold's Gym in Tallahassee in December of 2005, and was told by a gym employee when asked that I could cancel my membership at any time. I have not visited the gym since August 2006.

Since then I have had identity theft (non-related) in the form of my ATM card being stolen. Over the course of late November through early December 2006, I've contacted multiple companies to cancel checks and contracts.

Due to recurring monthly collection of gym fees, I contacted Gold's Gym and requested that my contract be cancelled due to both hardship and the fact that I wasn't using services any longer. I was told by the representative that I contacted that my request was "being processed."

I haven't heard from Gold's Gym since then, but have heard from numerous collection agencies on their behalf in the form of intimidating letters and phone calls over the past 3 months (since January 2007).

I supposedly now owe over 1,000 dollars on the contract that I attmpted to cancel: but apparently, it never was.

So, why do I think this is a scam?

1.) I have attempted to cancel my contract, and never heard anything further, except from intimidating phone calls/letters from collection agencies.

2.) My friend, who has never joined Gold's Gym, recieved letters from the same collection ageny on behalf of Gold's Gym, for different amounts of money.

3.) I would imagine that if they could have taken "legal action" by now, that they would have done so.

To my estimation, it's a scandal.

If I was able to cancel my contract with Gold's "at any time", why hasn't my contract been cancelled per the December request?

Since then, I have contacted Gold's Gym once more to TRY to cancel my contract. Also, I have contacted the Better Business Bureau seeking help. On the Better Business Bureau website, I see that Gold's Gym is not in good standing with many complants filed about related issues.

I have since been looking for a better gym with more reasonable contracts, and would advise anyone not to get involved with memberships at Gold's Gym.
