Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

In July 2018, my wife and I hired Got Mold? to inspect the mold issue in our home and to provide abatement services.  We were told, by Got Mold? that our basement would need to be gutted and the total cost of the mold abatement would be around $13,000.  Got Mold? olso told us to trust them and not to get any secondary opinions.

After Got Mold? left the premesis, we contacted our home inspector (Capital Home Inspections), who has extensive experience with disaster restoration services to give his opinion.  We told him our ordeal with Got Mold? and he stated that Got Mold? uses scare tactics to intimidate potential clients to utilize their services.  he also stated that the mold issue in our home was minimal and typical for such homes in our neighborhood.

My wife and I got a third opinion for Firmin Abatement Specialists who came to our place and provided a free assessment of our mold problem.  Felipe (the owner of Firmin Abatement) also told us (independant of Capital Home Inspections) that the mold problem was very minor and that they would charge us $786 to remove the mold and that it would only t ake an afternoon to complete the abatement process.

It was after the before mentioned opinions that I decided to call the laboratory in Ontario that did the tests (from Got Mold?) to gain a better understanding of the results.  I spoke with the supervisor who oversaw the technician who performed the tests sent in by Got Mold?  It was confirmed that the asbestos test was completed and that no mold test was completed.  The supervisor also confirmed that normal ranges for aspestos in the floor tiles used in our home was between 4-4.5% as per Saskatchewan building standards.  Got Mold? specifically told my wife and I that the test results lied outside the acceptable standards and that we also needed asbestos removal.  Furthermore, the supervisor also confirmed that he was instructed, by Got Mold?, that no mold test should be performed.  As such, we were charged $195 for a test that was not even performed.

Because Got Mold? misrepresented the asbestos test results and did not have the lab perform amy mold tests, we emailed the CEO (James Watson) and demanded a full reimbursement of $477.75.  We were met with a rather hostile response and were informed that we would not receive any reimbursement and that any remarks made online (or through any other avenue) would be met with legal action.  Due to the intimidation, we did not pursue the matter until now.

#2REBUTTAL Owner of company

Tue, January 29, 2019

We have never suggested to any of our clients as to trust us and not get any secondary opinions.

If a  company removed the mold for $786, they did simply that, removed the visible mold. A professional company would be more inclined to find the source of the problem and fix it. Chances are that if the wet and mold contaminated drywall was simply cut out and replaced but the source of the water intrusion was not rectified, the mold will simply come back.

For anyone who has extensive experience with disaster restoration would know that any building materials that were wet "from clean clear water" for more than 24 hours must be removed. The water infiltration appeared to be from possible cracks in the foundation "Typical of homes in this city" so it was not clean clear water from the start.

During our visual assessment of this house, the new home owner was telling us how horrible the home inspector referenced in this online post was that they didn't notice the water damage upon inspection.

The notes taken in our system from the individual who answered the phone on July 17th 2018 at 3:32pm was "Found mold behind the baseboard in a house that they bought just a month ago. She wants us to do a thorough inspection to prove that the home inspector should have caught the mold. She said she has lots of questions and wants a knowledgeable inspector that can answer the questions. Only available after 5 during the week.

Anyone stating that we are fear mongerers should get themselves educated prior to making such a claim. Anyone who wants real true data pertaining to mold illness can contact Dr. Bruce Hoffman at The Hoffman Centre https://www.hoffmancentre.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAkMDiBRDNARIsACKP1FHqMIRzDQaA5qGLMsKhgx_gh8eZQviwvOBdJcf9bnaCvUyEDF_tXcEaAjBlEALw_wcB

Below is the email this client was sent that they claim to have received a "rather hostile" response.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Dunlop,

When we were at your home to assess your mold situation I believe I asked you if we should call a spade a spade and consider the suspect visible mold growth as mold or should we test it and you spend the money. You agreed that we should call a spade a spade.

I am not sure why Mr. Santos would misinform you, but he absolutely did. I have copied Mr. Alister Haddad (Managing Director) at EMC Scientific laboratories in this email.

Attached are the Saskatchewan OH&S Asbestos regulations, you should read it in its entirety, however you can refer to the Asbestos Risk Decision Tree Legend, located on pages 1617 and 18.

After reviewing the legend, you can then skip down to pages 28 through 31 for Low Risk Asbestos Processes.

The Vinyl Floor Tiles we tested at your home are considered low risk, you can skip down to the information on page 48 to verify this and the procedures required by OH&S to remove them.

Disposal of the vinyl asbestos tiles, like any other asbestos containing material requires us filling out a manifest for the landfill, contacting the landfill 24 hours prior to dropping them off for disposal so that they can dig a hole in a specific area, we dump the double bagged in 6 mm yellow asbestos bags tiles into the hole and they then bury them. In other cases, we have the disposal company bring a bin and drop it off, we put a liner in it and when we are done, they come and seal the liner with the draw string, haul it away safely, dump it in a hole and bury it.

You asked us for a remediation quote for the suspect mold and water damage and in order to provide you with a proper quote, we had to do our due diligence and sample for asbestos containing materials. You agreed to have the drywall mud compound and the floor tile tested, so we tested it. The drywall mud compound and the mastic (glue) that holds the tile to the concrete was found to be non-containing.

I have also attached the report I compiled on site the day of our inspection. We typically would send our report prior to sending a quote but I went on and am still on holidays, so it was delayed but your email prompted this action to be taken while I am away on holidays.

If you want the mold tested, we will gladly test it for you, we can do bulk, air, swabs, whatever you would like so that you have information to present to your realtor and home inspector. The water damage and suspect mold growth in your basement is very obvious, and could potentially cause health concerns, specifically to the young, elderly, immune compromised and unborn babies. The longer you and your unborn baby are exposed, the higher the risk possibility to being affected negatively.

We are and take pride in being a very reputable company with almost ten years of experience in the industry. We are very well aware of and follow all OH&S regulations and legislation on all of our mold, asbestos, lead, radon projects and all other services we provide. If a company was to provide a quote for water damage and or mold contamination without first testing suspect building materials for asbestos, they would be very shady.

No refund will be provided as services were agreed to and rendered.

I want to caution you that if you slander or defame us on social media or in any other way, we will have no choice but to get our legal team involved.
