This company has been a nightmare to work with...with numerous additional fees and forms. I only owe them $1,000 as of today and they have already received over $5,000 for a loan I defaulted on for $1200. They have now sent me, out of the blue, Written Interrogatories to fill out and return within 20 days. I have 5 payments left. The local "attorney" involved had a dispute with Great Seneca and they didn't agree on my total fees and told me two different amounts.

Enough is enough.

To anyone interested, I've received copies of two documents from the Oregon State Bar Association. Both documents are open to the public ... so I'm not doing anything inappropriate. The first document is the "case summary" of the formal complaint filed by the Bar against Derrick McGavic (layman-friendly document). The second document is the formal complaint itself (legalese). Feel free to read both: http://lessismore.atspace.com/mcgavic_summary.pdf http://lessismore.atspace.com/mcgavic_formal.pdf According to the Bar rep I communicated with, the Oregon Supreme Court has yet to set a date for the hearing. However, when they do, the Bar rep told me that hearings are open to the public as well. I've been, to a small extent, a "court-watcher" in the past. But, I've never sat in on a hearing before the Oregon Supreme Court. I'll check with the Court from time to time to see when the hearing is scheduled. And, I think I'll go and sit in on this one (grin).

The neat thing about the Willamette Week article is that it mentions the name of a Portland attorney, Keith Karnes, who has successfully prevailed against McGavic for debtor clients who wanted to pursue him. If you are not currently represented by an attorney, it might be a good idea to consider an initial consultation with Mr. Karnes. According to the website of his parent law firm (Olsen, Olsen & Daines), the initial consult is free (grin). They've got 16 offices is Oregon and Washington so they're not a small firm. Their closest office to you in Milwaukie is the Portland Eastside office. Their number is: (503) 274-4252 Of their 7 areas of specialty, the one you'd be most interested in is "Creditor Harassment" - discussed on their page here: http://www.olsendaines.com/creditor%20harassment.html Good luck ... and I hope you prevail against this guy. He's really a bottom-feeder in my book.

Thank you so much for the link. It is great to see the media finally looking into this company and after seeing all of the responses on the WW site...it is clear this man and his company have ripped off a lot of people.

Deborah, I, too, have been victimized by McGavic and another lawyer-friend of his in Eugene, Daniel N. Gordon. Only filing for Chapter 13 bankruptcy protected me from their wrath. But, you might be interested in reading this article published recently in the Willamette Week: http://wweek.com/editorial/3413/10345/ McGavic is now is serious trouble ... and Gordon is getting a taste of the same bitter pill. Couldn't happen to two nicer guys.
