Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
My husband and I received a GIFT card for our wedding gift from people at work.  It was purchased at a local Walgreens Store.   The pre paid visa/ gift card was IMPOSSIBLE to activate.  I called the number on the card, and the automated system kept telling me "I do not understand what you are saying".  It would not activate the card without me releasing a great deal of personal information.  When I tried to supply it, I kept getting "I do not understand what you are saying".   After many failed attempts to activate the card, my husband called them.   He had the same problem!  He called back again and had to FUDGE the system in order to get a customer service representative.  The CSR told him they needed his social to activate the card, and tried to get him sent a re-loadable card (WE DIDN'T WANT THIS, we just freaking wanted to use our gift card dammit).   To make a long story short, the company makes it impossible to activate the card, the automated system plays dumb and hangs up even when you follow the commands correctly, and the company is a SCAM.   The rely on people not being able to activate their cards, clearly, that is how they make a great deal of money.  Between confusing customers and charging RIDICULOUS fees every MONTH (even when you haven't used the card) and the user fees, this is a complete RIP OFF and I URGE everyone to get refunds and not deal with this company.  Do not give them any of your business.  What a despicable way to rip people off during hard economic times.    Additionally, if you make the mistake of throwing away the plastic package it comes in, you may not be able to activate your card at all.   Be careful opening the card, as there are numbers they require you to read off to them in order to activate the card.   This number was ripped by opening the card.  Once again, another way they can deny you YOUR OWN money!

I hope this company gets shut down.   I am also writing to all companies that carry and sell green dot cards.

I HOPE THIS COMPANY GETS SHUT DOWN PRONTO!

Green Dot apologizes for your inconvenience and we want to help. Our reloadable cards are not gift cards, but rather financial services products and therefore we are required by federal law to verify customers identities before a card can be used. This means each customer must provide their name, address, date of birth and social security number. We do our best to alert customers of this requirement prior to purchasing our cards by including this information on the card package. But, even after a card is purchased if a customer is uncomfortable giving their personal information Green Dot offers a full refund of the initial load and the card purchase price. The refund option is easily accessible on our automated system. Green Dot wants to give you a full refund so you can enjoy your wedding gift. If you have not registered your card please call 866 785-6963, select the refund option and have your temporary card number available. If you have registered your card please call 866 795-7597, select the customer support option and have your card number available. Once you are on the line with a Specialist just let them know you want a refund.

Reloadable Debit cards are *NOT* Gift cards

#3Consumer Suggestion

You were given a Green Dot RELOADABLE Debit card.. it's not a gift card.

Reloadable debit cards require more personal info to register the card vs
a Gift Card/non reloadable Debit card.  Why? Because you can direct deposit into the cards and also get cash back at ATM's. You can't do that with gift cards. If you were to try and get a ATM/Debit card from a bank you would have to give up the personal info as well.  IF you don't like it..stick to the Non-reloadable Debit Cards or Gift cards.

As far as problems activating the Green Dot card...I had problems using
my cell phone...but was able to activate it no problems from a land line.
My Wife has a green dot card as well..she had no problems activating Online.
Best regards.
