In response to the report above:
This client submitted a file to our firm in October 2009 for a loan modification. In the following month of November (the week of Thanksgiving) - the company unexpectedly decided to close their doors and lay off the entire workforce (this was completely unforeseen and a misfortune to all of us, including the employees at the firm). In no way, was there ever any intention to rip this client off.

I 100% believe you were lied to and swindled. It's a d**n shame that there are predators out there like this and I hope someone posts who can help you to recover your money.
With that in mind, I've got a question. It's hard to ask this without sounding cynical, so don't get excited and take this wrong way...
Why would you pay $9000 to outside companies to save your home when that same money likely would have covered your mortgage and kept you afloat?
If the $9000 wasn't enough to help your situation with the mortgage, then believe me, nobody out there could help you because you've simply got way too much house.
I know, times are tough and situations change, but it appears that you've bought a house you can't afford. Just because you might have been able to afford it when you moved in doesn't mean you've earned the right to stay. Just because you might be able to afford it again when things finally turn around for you doesn't mean you've earned the right to stay either.
I get it. It's your home. You live there. You don't WANT to move. I really do understand. If you can no longer afford it though, there is no miracle you can buy for a few thousand bucks. You've learned this lesson the hard way so now, you got to do what is right for you, recoup as much as you can and get out with your shirt still on your back.
Thankfully, this is a very forgiving country when it comes to financial mistakes, so this won't do any real harm other than a few interest points on your next purchase. I hope things get better for you quickly.
