I had this company change my engine oil and I purchased a battery and had it installed. The oil change was $39.95 and the battery was $99.95 plus $20.00 for installation. At the bottom of the receipt I noticed a charge of $9.60 for "Shop Supples" when I questioned the employee about it he stated "We charge every customer that" I said what the hell is it for ? He said "Shop Supplies" I said what supplies did you put in my car for nearly 10 dollars? He said" Not so much the battery, but if we spilled oil on your engine, we have to wipe it up with a rag" I said then I should be taking home $9.60 worth of rags!. If every customer is charged this fee, for nothing, everyone is getting ripped off!!

Shop supplies or materials fees are charged from most shops that work on cars. It is a standard fee that every customer pays. Now granted some jobs my require more then $9.60 worth of rags, small parts, tape, solder, connectors, waste removal or disposal fees of your old parts, cleaning or replacing uniforms that got messed up from your dirty engine etc, and some jobs may require less then that amount.

However, it is simpler for them to come up with an average amount that all customers pay, this way they do not have to waste time itemizing every rag and screw and zip tie and disposal of old parts..it just makes more sense.

They could I am sure just raise the price of everything else to hide those fees, but either way those fees are legitimate, and those fees are not "hidden", it is always on the receipt and posted somewhere by the counter.

How do I get around it? I do my own oil changes and basic maintenance. Otherwise you have to pay these things. Although I feel some shops overcharge, I can't say in this case it is a rip off since the shop supplies fee was stated so you could have chose before authorizing the work to bargain out of it, or try another shop.
