In April my son bought a 2005 chevy cobalt car from them and they talked him into buying an extended warranty for 7 years - 70,000 miles. the car had 30,000 miles on it when purchased. He assumed the warranty would cover his first new car for 7 years or untill he had 100,000 miles. 30,000 + 70,000 is 100,000, right. WRONG.

when he recieved the paperwork for his warranty from chrysler it stated that the extended warranty started the day the car was first sold in 2005 to the previouse owner. What's up with that. I called the financial manager at the dealer and was told that he no longer worked there, hmmmm.

Calls to chrysler service have resulted in the same response, YOU SHOULd HAVE READ THE SMALL PRINT. Will never buy anything from these people again.

You're right, it does not seem to make sense but I had the same thing. I bought a used 2000 Mazda Millenia 3 years ago with 25,000 miles on it. I bought a 75,000 mile extended warranty actually from Mazda, not some 3rd party ripoff. I though it would start from the mileage the day I bought it - 25,000 miles and it would last until 100,000. I was dead wrong. It actually started from 0 even though I did not own the car then. They explained that the mileage referred to in the extended warranty is the mileage it expires at, not the amount of the warranty. I asked if that would hold true if I had bought it at 70,000 miles. they said yes, but it would have been cheaper because there would only be 5,000 miles to cover it. It was actually in my contract and they were right. It still seems a little misleading to me. I just will ask more questions next time. Live and learn. Not the dealers fault, it was mine for not looking closer.

I don't get this. An extended warranty doesn't run concurrent with a factory warranty, which I imagine is 3yr/36K, and you would still be within those parameters or close, I think. So if there were still 6K miles left on the factory warranty, and you bought an extra 70, you should be covered to 106. So what you're saying is that the warranty is retroactive to date it didn't even exist? Wouldn't the original factory warranty start on the date it was originally sold to the previous owner? Unless I'm not getting something this makes absolutely no sense.

Whats wrong with reading the so-called FINE PRINT before you SIGN? You simply glossed over the fact your son assumed what was covered. See anything wrong with that? You now have a choice. You can teach your son to READ EVERYTHING before signing anything or you can simply blame the dealer and cry about how you'll never buy anything from them again because your son failed to use diligence. The choice is yours.
