I pulled into Hess gas station (38500) at Academy and Grant at 8:52 am on 8/8/2014 and put my visa card into pump number 5 to get gas.

Pump said lift nozzle and pump gas, so that's what I did, ok I decided to pump 37.50 to the penny. I hang pump back up and leave.

I go home later on that night and decided to look into my credit card account and see some of my transactions, Next thing I know there is a 56.00 dollar charge from Hess gas station for 56.00 on my account.

So I go to try to figuer this out and go back to Hess station (38500) to speak to someone abut this charge and two times they turned me away and said it will credit itself back to your account etc, okay well I called my credit card company and they said there will be no credit the charge was 56.00.

So what happened here, looks like I got rippedoff by hess station 38500 at Academy and Grant in Philly. Do not put a credit card in them machine people do yourself a favor.

 Sincerely Raymond McCloud.  2014-08-09

P.S. I have receipt from gas staion and screen shots of my credit card account that shows the scam.

Tyg, you missed the part where the credit card company said it wasn't a hold

Tyg, you normally would be exactly right about the hold placed on the credit card.  As it happens, your solution of walking into the store and having an exact amount charged to the card is the right solution to avoid this ripoff by this or any gas station.

However, in his post he went back to the station twice and called the credit card company to find out the status.  In his post he details the credit card company's response:  there will be no credit back as it isn't a hold.

Was it a ripoff? Yes. Anytime you are charged more on your card than what your actual receipt for the purchase shows it is a ripoff.

The original author ought to report the false amount to his credit card company. Possibly even file a Motor Fuels Price Gouging complaint.

Call the Office of Weights and Measures in your state to see if their is a complaint form you can file against this gas station. If you have the proof, file every complaint you can file.

What YOU may be seeing is called a HOLD. It means that since YOU swiped your card at the pump, neither the gas station OR your credit card KNOW how much YOU plan on pumping. So they average out an amount. In this case Roughly $60. Sounds about right. I would suggest that in the future you NEVER swipe your card at the pump. I mean NEVER EVER!!!!! Depending on the merchants credit processor YOU could have a hold up to $125.00. ALWAYS get out of your vehicle and walk into the gas station. YOU are not so busy that YOU can't take a few mins and make YOUR gas purchase AT THE REGISTER!!!! Some places will ask for an amount, some places will just turn the pump on for you. Either way, NEVER NEVER NEVER pay at the pump!!! Its a suckers bet. If YOU don't have enough money in your account for the HOLD< it will overdraft your account and the bank WONT CARE!!!!! To them, its JUST a transaction. So learn from this!!!
