I have my student loans and refunds depositied to Higher One.  They charge $.50 for a pin based transactions and for merchant transactions for using my money.  Ex.  I have $.75 on my card, I used $.07 and charged me a $.50 pin based transaction that I was not aware of, I just my card a gain for $.40 transactions and charged me an other $.50, which I got an email stating that I was negative $.56 in my account and I need to pay right away and that my card is under restiction and i would not get my loans or deposits for school in my account until my accoutn is cleared.  Well, I paid with my bank card, to clear up the negative balance and the restrications will be taken off my accoutn in 1 business day.  It is not fair to be charged money to use my money and taking advantage of college students.

Hi there, my name is Lauren and I'm hoping I can help with your concern re: PIN fees.

With Higher One, you will always have choices, so be sure to read and understand your options carefully.  If you elect to open an optional Higher One checking account, you should know that Higher One is very upfront about its account structures, but not all banks are.

Recently, Higher One eliminated the PIN fee on two out of three of the accounts it offers.  On the OneAccount, the fee is avoidable by choosing “credit” not “debit” at the point of sale and “swiping and signing” for your purchase.  When you swipe & sign you are protected with the MasterCard® Zero Liability policy against fraudulent purchases.  This charge still exists on the on the basic OneAccount because there is a different cost structure on the back end for when we process a credit transaction versus a debit transaction.  You can always choose a Higher One account that carries no PIN fees.

Before you choose any account, be sure to do ample research on local credit unions and national banks. The Higher One primary OneAccount doesn’t cost anything to open and you will never get charged a monthly fee—no matter what your balance. The bottom line is to read the disclosures and do your homework before picking an account. Be informed and the choice is yours with Higher One.
