Homestead Financial, City Of Spokane Valley employment as a secret shopper scam Watertown New York
I received a check for $4660.00. Included with the check was a letter stating that I had been hired as a consumer service evaluator "secret shopper."
I realized that anything that seemed too good to be true; likely was. So I did a little research on line. First, I checked with BBB and found Homestead Financial, the name on the letterhead (oddly the payee on the check is City of Spokane Valley). BBB gave Homestead Financial Services at the same address an A+ rating as a mortgage company. I then realized that nothing in the letter required that anything be sent to that address. The real Homestead Financial Services probably doesn't know that their Company is being used as a coverup for this scam.
I continued to research on line and found a Ripoff Report on this site which had just posted. I'm grateful to ripoffreport.com and the individual that posted their experience when receiving the same "job offer." Thanks for protecting me from being their next victim.
Can someone give me some direction as to reporting this to the authorities. Should I take the check to the police? My bank?

Shred it and the letter. These scammers are operating from Canada, out of reach of US law enforcement. There is nothing you can do. Just be thankful that you didn't deposit that phony check in your bank. It is nothing but trouble. SHRED IT !!
