Sent email request for pricing on a 2006 Honda CR-V. Was contacted via phone on 2/3/06 by the Internet Manager(Elbony Beasley) who quoted me invoice plus TT&L and promised to take care of me. A short while later I received an email from the New Car Sales Manager/e-Commerce Director (Ron Wilkin)advertising a "Superbowl Special" good for 2/3/06 and 2/4/06 - $1000.00 below invoice on all 2006 CR-V's, Elements and Ridgelines.

I called Elbony back to verify that the price she quoted me would go down by $1000.00 and she said yes it would. I wanted to go ahead and verify all the details so that I could take delivery of the CR-V the following day. She said she was with a customer and would call me back.

She didn't call me back, I tried multiple times to call her and was always told she was with a customer, so I left voice mails asking that she call me back as soon as possible. This was both on 2/3/06 and 2/4/06.

Finally on the afternoon of 2/4/06 I called Ron Wilkin and explained the situation. I told him that I lived several hours away and that since the "special price" was only good through the rest of the day, I needed to verify everything before driving to the dealership.

He said he would make sure Elbony called me back and that since I lived so far away they would allow me to "hold the CR-V" with a deposit using my credit card and I could take delivery the following week.

To make a long story short they never called me back. Obviously they never had any intention of selling the vehicle at $1000.00 below invoice. They are DISHONEST!! They will not honor their own email specials or the prices they quote, stay away from this dealership.

I could have sworn this tactic that John is referring to is also known as "Bait and Switch" I could have also sworn that this tactic is illegal as well as unethical...

First off, no dealer gets 20% - 30% back from invoice, so calm down and keep your shirt on. The B.S. "special" you saw in the paper mere weeks after paying "way too much" for your Chevy was all smoke and mirrors, just like every other ad, from any car dealer. The purpose of a car ad is not to sell the vehicles at the advertised price - it is to get you to go there, nothing more. It's kind of like when a supermartket runs an ad for 12 pack sodas at $199. They actually pay more than that for it. Once you are there, though, you will usually buy other things that they can make a profit on. The method to the car dealer's madness is that an out of town customer will see the ad, then go to their local dealer and expect them to honor it. The local dealer wont, of course. The customer will then go out of his way to visit the advertising dealer. The advertising dealer wont honor it either, of course. Trust me, there will be a sound and perfectly legal reason. It will go something like this "we had one at that price, and it sold. Why dont you pick out one you like, and we'll do the best we can on it." At this point, the customer usually realizes how much his vehicle will actually cost (the same that his hometown dealer told him). But heck, he's at the adverting dealer already, and has devoted the day to it....might as well buy it here. Don't believe me? I make a fine living from this practice. Trust me.

We had this discussion on "invoice". The car guy said invoice was what the dealer paid for the vehicle. I said after all was said and done, he probably paid 20 to 30 PERCENT LESS then invoice, depending on the make and model. Here's a car dealer willing to sell a vehicle at "invoice". When it gets to $1000 LESS then invoice, is when he backs out. My point exactly. He also said something about my example of ancira chevy, selling me the truck for a couple hundred dollars OVER "invoice". The next week benson chevy had the EXACT SAME VEHICLE for $2000 less. So much for "invoive" price. ****I know, I know, I know, the dealer "pays" the "invoice" price and then gets 20 to 30 PERCENT BACK, at a later time. Hence he can say he "paid" invoice price. Pretty smart and he is being "truthful". And, he wonders why people have an attitude problem towards car dealers. IF I had purchased the vehicle from ancira and the very next week I find the SAME EXACT vehicle at another chevy dealer for $2000 less, my thinking is, ancira tried to rip me off for $2000 by using some hoky "invoice".
