I'm a former employee of Hotwire. The fact that you purchased the tickets the wrong way the first time, isn't really the problem. The problem is the credit card company. When you make a large purchase such as the one you made with hotwire, the credit card company puts a hold on the authorization for the amount you chose. When they rebooked you, it sounds like they refunded you the first tickets (which they didn't need to do mind you) and rebooked you the correct flight. Well, the credit card companies don't release authorization holds for a couple of days. Which is why you were being charged $500 and not $1000. The first flight was cancelled and was in the process of being refunded. The second purchase, of $500 was agreed to by you, and therefore it most likely will not be refunded to you.
