Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I have a dog named Dora who is an amazing animal. Apparently, my dog knows how to use the internet. Twice now, HughesNet has I downloaded stuff that I didn't. The first time was when I did one download and then it came up as though I did the same download twice. Right in a row. I explained that it was a mistake on their end. After all, why would I download the same thing twice right in a row? It was theri screw up, and they throttled me for it.

This time- they just proved themselves to be liars. They said I download 205MB yesterday at 10:00am. This is impossible, becuase I was not home, neither was my husband or our kids. That leaves my dog. My dog, who apparently downloaded 205MB. First they tried to say it was a windows update. It couldn't have been that becuase I did that a couple days ago prior. Then they tried to say that it must have been someone with a wireless laptop. Again, impossible considering we live on a farm and there isn't anyone around us. We have no neighbors near the range.

Now, they throttled us at 12:00noon yesterday when I called they told me that we were not throttled that it was because they were updating their software. I called thismorning and they tell me I can't load webpages because we went over our usage.... According to their own policy:

"What will my Internet access be like if I exceed the download threshold?

When the download threshold is exceeded, you will experience reduced download speeds for approximately 24 hours. During this recovery period, the HughesNet service can still be used for activities such viewing emails and Web surfing, but speeds will be significantly slower than your normal browsing experience."

But I don't even get that. I can't check e-mail with outlook, and 90% of pages don't load, even though they say you are supposed to be able to. In addition, it says it's only supposed to last for 24hours. Again, nothing but lies. Now they say that I was up at 1:00am and downloading. Impossible since my husband and I go to bed at 10:30pm.

According to my usage page:

08/15/2007 10:00 11:00 60 205.80 No 1.03

08/15/2007 11:00 12:00 60 80.13 No 0.64

08/15/2007 12:00 13:00 60 57.29 Yes 0.66

...I did NOT download anything. I even offered that they could remote into my computer to see I didn't. Further, even though I got throttled at 12:00noon, I for some reason will not be unthrottled until 1:00AM tomorrow.

1:00am tomorrow? That goes against their own policy of 24hours!!!!

So, my dog apparently knows how to use the computer, I guess. HughesNet is a ripoff.

If you leave your computer on all the time, it could be windows updating its self. One of windows service packs is about 250med in size... have you ever gotten the message that windows is ready to install updates.. If so they are being downloaded in the background, and this can happen any time the computer is on.. Alan

and am encountering the exact same problem as you are. My contract is up in January. We moved from a rural area that DID have DSL and we were very happy with it. We were devastated when we found out our only choice here was satellite. We paid a lot of $$ for this and I never suspected this would be such a nightmare. I call Embarq every week and BEG them to get things going in our area to get us hooked up again. There are a lot of new developments going up in our area and I see the Embarq trucks daily digging. They assure me it should be no longer than 3-4 months (I pray). With Hughes, I don't even know what I am paying for. I don't know who to call. I go days and days with zero access. This month I could not pay my bills online and had to do it all by phone and even had to resort to overnighting some of them which I usually pay online. When I called to try and get a credit for the service I did not have, I got the same BS FAP story. I have not downloaded anything. I downloaded 2 songs fron Itunes 2 weeks ago! They keep tellling me that I have exceeded the download threshold and I will not be able to use the service for 24 hours but it is down for days. Like you, I tell them that is impossible. Only the animals are home at those times and they have not yet mastered computer skills... or have they???????????????? I don't understand a peep from the people I talk to in "tech support" in whatever country they are. When I ask if there is anyone in the US I can speak to, All I get is a "stepford wife/husband" reply of "I apoogize for the inconvenience" and nothing else. At the end of the call they have the audacity of asking me to fill out a survey recounting the quality of service they provided (which, by the way, never ever shows up in my mailbox). I am convinced that this corrupt company is some kind of coverup and we are really funding terrorism by paying them. Think about it. And they are all just sitting around laughing at us as they collect our personal info. Why doesn't anyone speak English? The latest scam is that they are double billing me (Thankfully, I am not on "auto debit", and I pay an extra $5 bucks for that) and when I try to pay my bill, it does not allow me the option of entering the correct amount that I TRULY owe. It's either pay the double amount (fake inflated amount) or it won't allow the online payment. When I call them, they insist that I owe the inflated amount. It took me 2 hours on 2 diffrent occasions to correct this. And no, I was not anywhere near being late. In fact, I usually pay about a week early. It's scam after scam. From now I will just send them a check. I wonder if I should start making it payable to Hughes Net/Bin Laden. Whatever the case, when my contract is over, I am cancellling and if I have to use dialup, that's what I'll do until I can get something that works.
