I am a former employee of Servicing Solutions Group. Unfortunately, in my time there I heard a lot of calls like this and I wish to clarify what consumers have no idea about, or choose to ignore.
When AT&T was broken up, the phone companies were made to put into place 3rd party billing, where a company outside of your provider is able to bill to your phone bill. This is completely LEGAL. Maybe not ethical or moral, but it is completely legal and has been for over 30 years.
There are registration forms filled out and on file and I have seen for myself that it is clearly stated, NOT in fine print but in regular, readable print, what the person is registering for.
ILD and Servicing Solutions Group (SSG) are different companies. ILD is a billing company and they bill on behalf of dozens of different companies to your phone bill. SSG provides customer service for different services and is contracted with those services and is completely seperate from ILD. These companies do not have any info on each other besides that.
When a customer calls their phone companies, AT&T and Verizon reps have NO INFORMATION other than possibly the amount of the charge. Also, these companies (ILD, SSG) have NO INFORMATION about the customer's phone company account, as that is protected private info.
