A vulnerable young woman came to my office stating that she was in a program that helped her become a better public speaker, and that she earned points for getting people to subscribed to magazines or to donate them to hospitals or veterans. I questioned her, and she stated that she had been homeless and that she started with this agency about a week ago. She stated that she had to sign up 3000 people, and that she would earn $20,000 that she could use for school or to start her own business.
The girl had very little sales skills. I asked her how her company operated, and she stated that they woke up at 6am, and that they then went for breakfast, donut and coffee. She stated that the supervisor worked with the youth in her group on how they should approach people, door to door. She stated that at 12:30pm they would take a break and eat lunch. She always hesitated when I asked her what she had eaten or where she had stayed at. She stated that they stayed out until 6:30pm every day.
I pointed out to her that it was dangerous for her to be walking by herself in some of these neighborhoods. I asked her if they gave her a cell phone or some change that she could use to call in case an emergency happened or if someone attacked her while she was on the streets. She stated, "No." She did say that they would look for her if she didn't return. I offered her $5.00 for her to take and not report so that she could have some money to buy a snack or make a phone call, and she seemed as though frightened by the thought of taking money and not reporting it.
I called a church that has a shelter and after calling them and securing a bed, offered to have one of our female staff members take her to the shelter. She thought about a long time, and refused in the end.
I believe that this company INCONSERVE.COM/FLORD AGENCY is taking advantage of vulnerable young people and using them to further their scam. Don't take it out on the kids, find out who are the real jerks behind this operation and let's tar and feather these a55holes.
