Tax Return Preparer Fraud

According to a former employee, Jackies Tax Service in Timmonsville SC is a dishonest return preparer and is skimming money from her clients' returns and diverting a portion of the refund for her own benefit. The former employee advised me recently that Ms. Gibson informs her client that she will charge a certain fee, $125. for example. Then prior to providing the final total they will actually get back from a return she deducts an amount that will make her fee the max allowed by the IRS ($400.00). The employee said that people are generally so happy that they are getting money back, they don't question the return.

According to the IRS web site during fiscal year 2005, more than 110 tax return preparers were convicted of tax crimes.

ps. I became suspect of Ms. Gibson a while back after learning that she is a tax preparer. She lives a fairly lavish lifestyle for someone who prepares Tax returns out of a pawn shop. An acquaintance accessed a SLED report via the SLED CATCH web site and found that Ms. Gibson has multiple felony offenses for Breech of Public Trust. One in Hartsville, SC in 2000 where she was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The sentence was suspended and Gibson served 5 years on probation and was ordered to pay $50,000.00 in restitution. She has a more recent charge from Florence in 2006, also for Breech of Public Trust.
I think that it's terrible that Ms. Gibson is likely getting away with defrauding the good people of Florence County of their hard earned money and the community certainly deserves to know what's happening.
