Jackson Hewitt and most other places of this type charge per form used. The computer program is set up using a 1040 because this form covers anyone that files. When you file you taxes, unless what you itemize is MORE than what the government gives you as a standard deduction it is pointless and a waste of time to itemize, this includes the mortgage interest. When I managed an office for them (9 yrs) we made a point of explaining this to everyone - to be honest - not only to save the customer money, but to keep from having to do unnecessary work. When you are doing 1 return after another you don't want to do more than you have to. There was no need for this person to do this, and no need for you to have to pay extra. The computer also applies fees to the time it takes to fill out the forms. I would definitely find the main office in your area (In Saint Louis it is on Natural Bridge just east of Lucas and Hunt, South side of the street, can't remember the exact address) and talk to the Owner. You should get at least a partial refund.

That is just poor service. The employee should -never- file the return until you've agreed to the fee and only if the larger fee was able to increase your refund.
