I am writing on behalf of my daughter and her tax preparation from Jackson Hewitt. I know your are a spokesman for this company and would be interested in knowing about some of their practices that I would consider predatory.
She is a single mother of two and earned $4,700 last year. When she went to the Burlington NJ office her taxes were prepared on a 1040 form. Her total preparation fees were $364 which inlcluded rapid refund. This could have easily been prepared on a 1040EZ at a much lesser fee. As Jackson Hewitt would be considered experts in this field they should have made that recommendation to her.
As a spokesperson for this company I would expect you are familar with the tax process. An although I have not given you all the specifics you can see that these fees were very excessive.
I have contacted the local disctrict office about this matter, after receiving several different names and numbers to contact.
I am now waiting for a response. They would Not give me the number to the corporate HQ, also I have sent Emails to ALL of my friends and associates
As a man of high ethics and morals, I thought it important for you to be aware of the practices of your endorsements.
I also hope you will look into this to matter to protect people like my daugher in the future.

Your daughter paid $364.00 to have her taxes prepared and got a rapid refund. She has 2 children and was probably head of household so she was probably getting a couple thousand dollars back, I assume. When she paid for the rapid refund she paid for the convenience to have her money back to her earlier, rather then having to wait 4-6 weeks. I bet had she not of went for the rapid refund then she probably would of paid much less then $364.00. When she signed up for the rapid refund she knew it was going to cost extra money so how exactly did Jackson Hewitt rip her off? They provided her a service, they got her the refund probably pretty quickly, which is a nice convencience. You get paid for your job, she gets paid for her job, why shouldnt the tax man get paid for his job? She made less then 5K so its obvious she is not paying a whole lot in taxe and I am assuming she doesnt work very much- so shes defiantely a taker. She should probably get a real job and quit making babies, just my advice.

DO YOU THINK FOR ONE MINUTE THAT MAGIC JOHNSON ACTUALLY USES THESE PEOPLE FOR HIS PERSONAL FINANCIAL MATTERS??? GET REAL. HE HAS THE MONEY TO HIRE THE BEST CPAS THAT MONEY CAN BUY AND THANKS TO THEM, HE STILL HAS BIG BUCKS. Free Tax Preparation from VITA

I suggest that you daughter go to a VITA site next year to have her taxes done. VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. It is sponsored by the IRS and is free to anyone who makes under $42,000. As for Jackson Hewitt, I agree that their fees can be excessive. As a VITA volunteer I get many people coming in who paid over $100 sometimes $200 for tax preparation for the previous year. However, as you noted she is a mother of two which I assume she claimed as a dependent. You can not claim dependents on a 1040EZ only on a 1040A/1040. You daughter taxes could probably been done on 1040A but I assume they did 1040 to make it easier on them. The two forms are very similar. For me it easier to learn how to use two forms instead of three. Plus the 1040 list more credits and deductions so I can make sure that my client get all the deductions they deserve. I also doubt there will be a fee difference between the two.
