Recently bought a load of as-is store return big screen TVs from Jacobs Trading - we buy containers full of as-is electronics on a weekly basis and this was our first purchase with Jacobs Trading.

We specifically asked the salesperson (Mark Webert) if the TVs were current models. Mark replied "Yes, they are current models, we will not send you any junk".

Wire transferred $13,000 to Jacobs and received the TVs about two weeks later. Opened up the truck to find one of the worst shipments we've received in years.

The "current model" TVs turned out to have manufacturer stickers from 1999, 2000, 2002, etc.. the newest model was from 2006. All TVs had been gone through already, nothing "as-is" about this load. TVs were clearly marked "Scrap" and "Destroy"

Contacted Jacobs Trading, provided them with photos and details and got the runaround for several weeks. Started working with a Howard Grodnick, who I was told was the owner. Both Mark and Howard apologized, told us that they don't know how we could have got those TVs and that they would work it out. Mark Webert confirmed to us and to Mr. Grodnick that he had told us we would be purchasing "current model TVs".

After another couple of weeks of delays, Mark Webert made us an offer: they would give us a $10 discount on 1000 Magnavox DVD players. That's it. Not only was the offer disingenuous in our opinion, it wasn't even a good deal.

Once we informed Mr. Grodnick and Mr. Webert that at this point we would be forced to share our experience with the surplus community at large, Mr. Grodnick instructed us to never contact him again.

We are looking at our options for a recovery. Learn from our experience...

The real owner of Jacobs Trading Jacobs Trading Company (JTC) is one of several privately-held companies owned by entrepreneur Irwin Jacobs. Mr. Jacobs is chairman of Genmar Holdings, Inc., the largest privately-owned manufacturer of recreational boats in the world and the industry's technological leader. Mr. Jacobs has owned or controlled a variety of businesses including start-up companies. Mr. Jacobs has focused the majority of his energies developing businesses and creating opportunities for both employees and the residents of the communities in which his companies operate. I would ask to speak with him or contact him at Genmar. This should light a fire under there butts. Irwin is a high profile guy and I am sure he does not want his name tarnished. If you paid $13,000 for goods that were outlined to be current modles and were not, then request to have all your money refunded less the shipping and pay to ship the items back. It may cost you a little but in the end you should get most of your money back.
