I also recieved a letter from Jefferson Capital about a debt that I had paid in full and closed five years ago. They threatened me with legal action unless I opened a new credit card to pay a debt that was already paid years ago. I called them myself and explained the situation with no help from them at all. I then retrieved my credit report with the proof that this debt was paid and called them back an hour later. Before I could even say anything they told me the offer had been withdrawn and they couldn't pull up any information on me (in only an hour!). Luckily I did not fall for this but unfortunately some people are. I have filed claims with the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) and the Federal Trades Commission (www.ftc.gov). I would suggest you consider doing the same to help prevent others from falling for this. The FTC has already filed suit against Jefferson Capital for "Deceptive Credit Card Marketing." Of course as you were explaining in your post, the most important thing is keeping an eye on your credit report which you can do for free at www.annualcreditreport.com and disputing anything fradulent as soon as you see it.
