Criminal conduct by Sacramento attorney J. Richard Sokol of the family law firm Sokol and Bristow is documented by court filings and transcripts. Sokol aided and abetted, and conspired with client April Berger in a child abduction and out-of-state move away in a family court case. The objective was to deprive the father, Robert Saunders, of visitation with his children in violation of California Penal Code sec. 278.5.

Divorce lawyer Richard Sokol is a sworn temporary judge, or judge pro tem, in Sacramento County Superior Court. Sacramento Family Court reform advocates have documented that judge pro tem attorneys receive preferential treatment from judges and court employees in exchange for operating the family court settlement conference program. In his role as a temporary judge, Sokol was caught along with other unethical attorneys using the title as judge pro tem to promote his law practice, a violation of the California Code of Judicial Ethics, the ethical standards all judges must follow.

Corruption, collusion and undisclosed conflicts of interest between judges and judge pro tem attorneys has been documented by Sacramento Family Court News, an online, nonprofit journalism organization. Click here to view a list of examples posted at SFCN. Court watchdogs allege that the judge pro tem arrangement is an illegal organized criminal enterprise that deprives the public of the federally protected right to honest government services, a federal crime

At a court hearing last year, Sokol coconspirator Judge Thadd Blizzard issued an illegal court order authorizing the abduction and out-of-state relocation. Sacramento Family Court News has posted online the transcript from the hearing: click here. California Penal Code section 278.5(c) specifies that a court order obtained after a child abduction does not constitute a defense to the crime.

Sacramento Family Court News also published a series of posts entitled Color of Law documenting the mistreatment of financially disadvantaged unrepresented, pro per litigants, and the preferential treatment provided to divorce lawyers who also serve as temporary judges in the same court. For most of his case, Robert Saunders, who also is disabled, was forced to represent himself because he could not afford a lawyer.

The recently released documentary film Divorce Corp, designates Sacramento Family Law Court as the most corrupt in the United States. Saunders and three other Sacramento Family Court litigants appear in the movie. Saunders has been active in the family court reform movement and court watchdogs say the unlawful child abduction order issued by Judge Thadd Blizzard is retaliation against Saunders for his activism on behalf of all financially disadvantaged, unrepresented family court users who can't afford legal representation.
