..I do not notice anything they did was illegal. Lousy customer service and blunders are not illegal. I use Chase but only for a free checking debit card, not a credit card so I don't have any personal experience with their ethics issues, only what I read on complaint reports. I should note however that they try RELENTLESSLY to get me to sign up for overdraft coverage..but dispute their futile efforts, I know better. I will not give them the opportunity to financially fleece me.
My experience with Chase so far has been trouble free. But I do read about plenty of questionable ethics issues from them with just about every other service they offer.
I also can not understand why they did not call or email if they had that contact info on record. I would think if a payment is late they do all they can to contact you to collect. Sure you had to pay for the air time on the phone, but I have read that there is a bank or banks that actually charge the customer when the customer calls them..be thankful Chase did not do that too.
As far as collecting a debt from the deceased, if it was not a joint account, they still may go after the spouse..but this law varies state to state. Sometimes they can not collect from anyone if the account holder dies..but certainly they can legally close an account alive or dead if the payment is late, right or wrong. Even if due to an error on their part I doubt they will take any responsibility for the time, effort, hardships or phone calls it cost you..they will just reinstate it. This goes for all banks it seems...if you make a mistake you are held 100% responsible for it and any resulting fees THEY choose to charge you..if they make any mistakes however...well lets just say I am surprised they even apologized.
As far as you being deployed they don't care..oh they "should" being that you are risking your life and serving the country they operate it..but they don't have to care. To them it does not matter the reason you are late, or the reason they can not contact you or you can not contact them..all they care about is..you guessed it...themselves. And unless they violate any laws in doing so..you have to live with it or try a different bank/credit union that can better suit your personal needs.
