Kaplan University Online KU I went from owing $2399 in 2008 to a $0 balance to owing $904.79 for 2008 in 2010 to $5140.01 in 2010! davenport, Iowa
I got phone calls back the end of 2008 stating I had maxed out my loans (granted I just transferred from Andover College to KU the beginning of 2008). The amount I owed out of pocket was $2399. My financial aid advisor was no help. So I had to deal with the financial aid manager who said to take 1 class my next semester and this would give me a credit and wipe out what I owe. So I did what he told me. Ended up being paid up all along until this past March 2010 when I started receiving phone calls saying I owed $904.79 from 2008! I contact my new financial aid advisor who says he is going to make adjustments to my account and let me know the balance I owe if anything. Well, I went from $904.79 to $5140.01! I was told I am at my limit with aggregate loans. Well, nowhere in my paperwork does it show that I am over my limit. After my husband and I sat down and went through my account from 2008 to now and all the money that was paid in to KU, I actually have a credit of about $335! But yet with this credit showing on my account status, I still owe $5140.01? How can that be? Why did the college not ask for more money on my behalf to cover the rest of my schooling? Why did the college not ask for a reaffirmation letter (Which by the way is a promissary note) to get more money? Instead they want me to opt for their Kaplan Choice Loan? Nope, not gonna happen. So I did what I thought I had to do and I think is the correct choice. I did contact and HIRE a lawyer against KU. Now to see where we go from here since. I have to say though, most lawyers will wait before you hear anything from them, this guy is awesome! I left his office in Lewiston, Maine and drove home to Poland, Maine and there was an email to my financial aid advisor from my lawyer! Now this is how a lawyer should be!
I have to agree with some others on this website, I think this should be brought to the the media's attention. News, newspapers, but we have to be careful of slandering KU. That's going to be a big issue right there.
Kaplan University is buying out Andover college here in Maine. So I have made a post to some people I know on facebook that are currently going to KU online to read this website and think twice.
I have also contacted all my lenders about how much was dispersed to KU and found that I still have money available for my classes! So I am not over my limit. But yet I am getting no paper trail that I have requested numerous times in the last two months from my advisor. This is what prompted me to consult with a lawyer.
I say, let's all get together with email addresses and start a petition or something and get KU to pay our legal fees and take them to court and stop this NOW before they can get more victims involved. This has been going on since 2005 if not earlier than that. The only reason I went here was I figured since I was at Andover and they are sister schools, my credits would transfer and it shouldn't be a problem. Now look where I'm at. Right here along with everyone else.

Fortunately, I am connected to an actual campus an hour from where I live. I receive monies that were dispersed each term and I also receive and update from Direct Loans telling me what they dispersed for loans to Kaplan University.
Again, fortunately, I have not had any problems with financial aid.

I have my local media investigating my financial aid problems too..KU are con artists and they manipulate you from person to person attempting to confuse the student...I have waited an entire week and still no return phone call from my Financial advisor....I have all documentation to back up my claims of unfair and deceptive financial practices on the part of KU

Update as of 6/7/10, I now owe $7873.01! KU refunded $13816.36 back to my student loans without an explanation. I called the FA dept. I was told it is what I OWE them and I have to pay it, they can't get it from the loans because it is NOT a mistake on their end. I finally got fed up with them and told them I am on to them and I will take it nationally to the media and have them shut down. The lady hung up on me. So I got the wonderful survey at the end of the call.

2. Overall how do you rate your financial aid advisor? 0 being worst and 10 being best. 0
3. Would you recommend KU to your friends and family? 1 for yes 2 for no. 2.
4. Did we resolve the probelm or issue you are having or had? 1 for yes 2 for no. 2.
Want to give me another survey? I even told the student accounts survey people that I'm onto them and they were not aware of the problems through financial aid but I highly doubt they were not aware of it.
