KAPLAN UNIVERSITY DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR STUDENTS!!! I started having the same issues as most of you about 4 months ago. Someone from student accounts called around 4 months back to say I had been set up with payments and they were calling to find out why I missed the first two payments? This was the first time I ever heard I needed to make payments so I contacted my financial aid advisor (you would think that was the right thing to do) left voice mails and emails for 4 months. I contacted the financial aid office 3 or 4 times a week and each time I reached one of the financial aid officers I was told they had to review my account and would call in about a day or so but after 3 months no one called or emailed. Finally someone contacted me after I sent an email stating I was in the process of getting a lawyer because I was not going to pay for something I never agreed to or was informed about. Once a financial aid advisor returned my call I got several different amounts that I owed the university and was told they had to refund money because I had come to the end of my stafford loan and the financial aid office was not informed by the stafford loan until a year later. After talking with someone in student accounts today I got yet another different amount and the student accounts officer proceed to use collection agency tactics to get me to pay this undecided amount. I contacted FAFSA and they said this happens occasionally that students can use all of their stafford loan and not be notified until its too late, so I am now stuck between a rock and a hard place the university is not responsible and FAFSA is not responsible. I owe thousands of dollars and still DO NOT HAVE A DEGREE. I am looking to see if a class action lawsuit is possible? If one has already been started I want to be included!!!!!

Because this is Ripoff Report I feel the rip-off was: the University not contacting me for 4 months and then only after I threatened the University with getting a lawyer. I feel if everything was on the up and up and this was truly a miscommunication by Kaplan University's financial aid office and the Stafford loans someone in the financial aid office someone would have contacted me within the first week of receiving the numerous emails and phone calls I sent!!! And as of today I still do not have a solid amount as to how much I owe the school"

I am in the process of getting a lawyer and I have sent several letters to the Attorney General and State Senators for each state where Kaplan has an office. I also filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Bureau of Consumer Protection and I will continue to file complaints until some government agency listens. I am in the process of starting a petition and will update this site once I have everything in place. For those who believe the people on this site should have done better research or Kaplan wasn't being misleading. I did all the research and made the phone calls and Kaplan and the Stafford Loan did not keep their records up to date for a full year. I was told all the financial aid I had received for 2007 from Stafford Loan had to be refunded and Kaplan stated they were not notified until the end of 2007 by Stafford. I am still feeling OUTRAGED about this situation. Kaplan refuses to send me anything in writing. I have made several requests and for 6 months I have not received ONE statement explaining how Kaplan came to this amount.

Kaplan University is NOT a school, it is a BUSINESS. Welcome to for-profit online "education." I am sorry you got suckered into paying thousands for nothing but heartache. You and other students do not DESERVE this bull. If you do need to earn your degree online, look into not-for profit schools that offer some programs online, such as Drexel University, DePaul University, and Marshall University. What degree do you want to pursue? Major? I am sure I can find a good online program from an ACTUAL school, not a business posing as a school.
