Kaplan University Hold Stipends, Do not Return Emails, Rude, Scam, BEWARE... Internet
Kaplan University started out being a dream come true. Having 3 children at home and working full time when I started, makes it impossible for me to go to college. I am a student now for 3 years and in my last year. The entire time I have been with Kaplan I have to call each semester to get them to process my stipend and issue me a check. Then it takes about 1 month to get it from the phone call I make. I should not have to do this, they know they have my money, so why do I need to call. The classes are good and teachers for the most part are too. Going to college online is a nice experience but with Kaplan it is a nightmare! I was going to withdraw from school and finish my last year at another University, but to my surprise the credits ARE NOT TRANSFERABLE!! What? I thought they are an accredited school, so why not? No answer. I have emailed the school for 2 months since last semester asking about my last 2 stipend checks with no response. When I call, I am on hold for over 1 hour and then either no one picks up or the phone disconnects. When I do get some one they act as if I am bothering them. The business office who issues the checks will not take calls or emails from students anymore since July 2010. FA tells me everything on their end is done and I need to do nothing either, so why are they not mailing me over $2000 in stipends!?!?! I have no idea and no one is giving me an answer. My advisor basically asked me if I was not happy then if I wanted to withdraw. What kind of question is that? She never asked to help figure this out to make me happy, and the joke of a grievance I filed was never responded to. So there entire process is messed up. Do not go to this school. My husband went to another online school and had similar issues, but not to this extent. If I knew my credits were not transferrable to any other school I would not have gone there. My advice is to look around and ask people first, do not take the school word. Kaplan also has been mailing me books that are written by them so you can not even resell them to make a few dollars back. After the class is over either you keep them or you trash them, no other school will use them! You have no choice either, you have to buy them, it is part of the high tuition. Now I found out when I want to get my Masters I have to go to Kaplan or my BA does not get accepted anywhere either! This whole thing is a mess. They scammed me and I have no choice but to either throw away 3 years and 140 credits of work, $80,000 +, or keep paying them and get some kind of a degree at least. I feel very used, mistreated, misguided, work all over, and taken advantage of. I hate this school and am embarrassed to say I ever attend...

Kaplan University is regionally accredited by the Higher
Learning Commission www.ncahlc.org. While
credits from one regionally accredited university may transfer to another
regionally accredited university, there is no guarantee. Individual
universities determine transfer of credit policies at their own discretion.
This is not an issue specific to Kaplan University, so its best for students
to always research transfer options in advance, when possible.
