I moved to Philadelphia in June 2007 from New York. I was very excited about moving to a new place and found a great apartment in Center City that a friend of mine had lived in.

When I moved in I was promised that the floors would be restrained and the ceiling fan would be raised. Neither had been completed and the entire loft was full of dust and dirt even down to the grime in the bathtub and fridge, with a stove that did not work. I had thought that it would at least be clean and the promises made to me would be fulfilled. None were ever met.

There were many times that I needed various appliances fixed in the apartment (stove and garbage disposal) and when I would return home strange men would be in my apartment without my knowledge. It was stated in the lease 24 hours notice would be given and most of the time they wouldn't even show up to fix the problems for weeks. My toilet had clogged and was unable to be plunged. I called my landlord several times to have it fixed because it was the only bathroom in the apartment. He waited 4 days before a plumber had come over and let himself into my apartment at 8am while I was sleeping in my underwear with my fiance in the living room which was very embarrassing. After plumbing the toilet I found feces and urine residue all over the walls and behind the toilet, not to mention it still wasn't flushing properly. After a week of living with a toilet that would only flush urine and no toilet paper I was forced to go to the bathroom in other tenants bathrooms or public restrooms.

They finally came back 8 days after the first incident and fixed it properly leaving more raunchy matter on the walls and floor. Another incident involved a clogged sink. I was left without a sink to wash my dirty dished for two and a half weeks. I left message upon message and was told when my landlord finally got back to me that she was "out of town" and "forgot" to call me back.

When the sink was finally fixed the handyman had let himself into my apartment without my knowledge once again and fixed the problem while I was at work. Everything under my sink was scattered all over the floor and my dirty dishes were on my stove and on the floor. Since the garbage disposal was broken while he had fixed it, it had exploded it the kitchen leaving a smelly brown substance all over the cabinets, stove, microwave, dishes, and walls which was never cleaned up. I am also a very neat and cleanly person who always had the place spotless so I was very disgusted by this.

The day of my move out this past May 31 2008 was horrifying. I had my movers cancel the night before and I was forced to move out on my own down 3 flights of stairs. I was supposed to be out by noon and she had showed up with painters around 8am demanding I get my "s**t" out. She had her painters start moving my belonging into the u haul scratching and break lamps and tables. Then after all this she promised them I would pay 200 dollars for their services that she demanded of them.

After bringing my belongings to uhaul and moving them into storage I returned at 2pm to get my food out of my fridge and it was thrown into a garbage bag with frozen ice cream, milk, chicken, condiments broken and dumped all over everything and completely ruined. I had just spent 200 dollars at the grocery store and everything was ruined.

After the nightmare was finally over I got my security deposit check back a month and a half later which it should have been returned within 2 weeks of my move out date (stated in the lease and state law) with 125 dollars deducted for a cleaning charge. The place was spotless! This was a horrible experience and I suggest no one rent from this slumlord!

I am shocked to read this report from "Sarah 12". I first met her when she moved into her apartment last year but we never spoke except for when I called her each month to ask about why her rent was late. She always had a lie or an excuse. Sarah only contacted me in early 2008 to complain about a maintenance issue once or twice and she was always treated fairly. She says she did not get her security deposit back in a timely manner. It was mailed on June 25th, within the 30 days required by law and she was only penalized for a cleaning charge and a late fee, not for violating her lease by leaving after 12:00 pm as the lease states, and not for the repeated fees incurred by her when I had to hire a plumber to come several times to clear her toilet which she stuffed with feminine products. It is always sad when someone blames everyone else for their mistakes instead of taking responsibility for their own actions.
