I was looking for a Toyota Tacoma for my son on the internet, and I found what sounded like a good deal at Karl Malone Toyota in Draper Utah. I live 600 miles away in Lewiston Idaho, so I wanted all the information I could get. I called and talked to David Hicks, and he told me because this is a Toyota dealership, all used Toyota's are put through an inspection. He faxed me a copy of the options, and it had everything I was looking for, so we agreed on a price, and I said I would fly down there the next morning to pick it up. When I got to the dealership, the pickup was sitting there, it had not been detailed, the windshield was broken, and the antena was missing. If it had been inspected, you would of thought these was have been fixed. Anyway, 3 hours later they finally had me ready to go. I wrote them a check, and headed for home. The next day I went out to give it my personal inspection, and the first thing I noticed, was there was NO tow package. That was one of the main reasons I bought it. Upon further inspection, I found the leaf spring on the right rear was broken, and had been for quite a while. I emailed David Hicks about these issues, he never replied, so I emailed Brandon Scott, the sales manager, he never replied, so then I emailed Andy Madsen, the general manager, he never replied. I finally got ahold of Brandon Scott on the telephone and asked him about these issues, and he said he would find out whats going on and call me back---------not. Don't ever buy anything from this dealership!!!

Even if your intentions were good, if you look at your initial reply, you were mocking the victim. And this is what the bank defenders do when banking victims lodge complaints here as well.

And that negates any good intent or legitimate advice. All it accomplished was to make the OP angry and defensive, when all he did was post his experience to warn others. I am sure like many bank policy victims learn by their mistakes, that surely Joe has leaned from his. Kicking dirt and rubbing it in his face AFTER the fact, helps no one.

And if someone continues to make the same mistakes over and over, whether it is overdrafting an account, buying a vehicle without inspecting it thoroughly first, or ordering a product online that claims $39.99 in bold print, and your card ends up being charged $399.99 because you missed the fine print, no advice here will help them regardless. So what is the point, purpose or intent for leaving it? It would seem logical it is simply the idea of making others feel bad, or worse then they already do. That also, helps no one.

However most who lodge reports here are doing so to warn others of the bad business or fine print because they fell for it, and obviously know it. So kicking them when they are down, AFTER they already learned the hard way, is redundant.

This site is here for consumers to lodge complaints if they were done wrong, and the businesses are free to respond, rebut or make good.

Those that reply here for no other purpose then to insult, belittle and bash the posters, are taking away credibility from the good intentions of this site. If you or anyone feels the complaint is not legit, by all means you should come to the defense of the business. In this case, it is reasonable to assume this is a bad business and this customer was done wrong. Unless you can prove otherwise, or can offer this consumer some recourse, all other comments are better left unsaid. I am not claiming you were defending the business in this case, but you certainly are doing a good job at angering the victim, for no legitimate reason I can find.

Ronny, We're On The Same Page, But....

Ronny:

We are on the same page, I think!  It would be GREAT if American consumers could trust car dealers.  But you and I both know the level of fraud/deception  which exists in that sector of retail.  Therefore, all of us, me included...especially me included...need to be a smart consumer!  None of us is going to be able to clean up the car business but all of us can use common sense when dealing with them and NOT opening any doors so they can defraud us.  There is NO DOUBT in my mind the OP was poorly treated by this dealer...no doubt at all.  However, the OP didn't have to just sit there and take it!  It would be one thing if we were talking about some obscure, complicated point of financial accounting...but we aren't!  Common sense demands you check out what you are buying BEFORE you buy it!  The car dealer which "specializes" in defrauding customers knows its not like "taking candy from a baby"...rather its "taking candy from a sleeping baby"!  Far too many people throw common sense out the window when it comes to buying a stupid car. All one needs to do is read thru these reports and there's example after example of someone "throwing common sense out the window".  These people seem to think they are helpless victims when defrauded, yet far too many of them play doormat rather than having the backbone to get up and walk out!

I am not speaking from some sort of Ivory Tower.  There was a time when I did exactly the same thing!  I was a doormat and I willingly slid under the doormat of myself rather than being a man and walking out at the first sign of fraud.  And, I am not saying all car dealers are slime.  There are some outstanding, moral people in the car business and as I've always said, when you find one, stay with them as a customer for life.

Again Ronny, if we were discussing some very obscure point of law, accounting or finance, I'd be singing a different tune.  But we aren't!  There's nothing secret or obscure about the wisdom in checking out a car BEFORE you buy it!

..but, it is only because I believe you are missing the point of the report.

Sure, it is easy to knock the victim of a bad car deal by claiming they should have had the car checked out etc etc blah blah barf...

But, does that still mean the public should not be notified via a report that the dealership lies?

Case in point....

Dealership states ALL used Toyotas are put through an inspection.

Dealership faxes a copy of the options and it had everything he was looking for, so a price was agreed

He then travels by plane to the dealership (yes people have a right and often do travel a far distance to buy a vehicle with the options/price they want if it is not found locally, it is not unheard of or unreasonable), and the vehicle was not detailed, it had a broken windshield and a missing antenna. Surely the "inspection ALL used Toyotas are put through" should have noticed that much at least?

Then, when he gets the vehicle home, it does NOT have an option that was stated on the fax sent to him (the tow package).

The dealer is now playing phone tag and doing the old no call back/no answer email routine.

So Jim, although you make a fair point that people should never buy a vehicle unless they have it checked out first, insulting and provoking this customer serves no purpose.

The purpose of this report is to warn others of how the dealership conducts business, nothing more, nothing less. And the report does this clearly with no rebut or reply as of yet from the dealership in question.

It is not the intelligence or judgment of the OP that should be put to question here, it is the way this dealership conducts business, and how they will handle an accusation of defrauding a customer. And what better place for a customer to report a complaint, then a forum such as this designed for consumers to lodge complaints against businesses that have done them wrong?

*ALERT!!! WE CAN NO LONGER BELIEVE WHAT ANYONE SAYS IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BECAUSE....

the United States of America is a country whose foundation is solidly built on- LIES, DECEPTION, FRAUD, MANIPULATION, GREED, TRICKERY, DEEP CORRUPTION, & the CONSTANT PURSUIT TO FINANCIALLY INJURE THE INNOCENT PEOPLE LIVING HERE, & ALL OVER THE WORLD.

Proof: Anyone can 'Google' this- STEAK DINNER POEM, and go to the Ripoff Report entitled- 'Bank of America Paid a Fraudulent Charge to My Credit Card', and read the '1st Update' to that Ripoff Report.

That's a copy of the EXACT letter that was hand-written and mailed to the Mainstream Media in the USA on 9-12-2007, when the Dow Jones was near 14,000 points.

Anyone can 'Google' this- RIP OFF REPORT RICHMOND TOYOTA BIGGEST JOKE, and get the addresses to the Mainstream Media, right? The addresses appear in the Updates section, don't they? (Pay attention to the date.)

Now 'Google' this- RIP OFF REPORT GM CREDIT CARD SERVICES, and go to Betty's Ripoff Report about her interest rate going from 10.99% to 32.44%, and read the '1st Update' to her Ripoff Report. Look at what the 3rd paragraph says- Quote: "The Collapse of the U.S. economy is in its infancy. Get all of your money out of the stock market and..........." (Pay attention to the date.)

*If the Mainstream Media in the USA cannot be trusted to at least look into the potential of what was stated in that letter of taking place, and alerting the American people about it, then WHO can we trust in this country anymore?

WELCOME TO AMERICA- ONE BIG CAR DEALERSHIP, OUT TO DEFRAUD AS MANY INNOCENT PEOPLE ON THE PLANET AS POSSIBLE

Thank You

Tell Me Joe....

Tell me Joe....

What is "STUPID S---" about checking out a car BEFORE you buy???

 Tell me Joe...

What is "STUPID S---" about being a wise consumer and NOT rewarding dishonesty by giving the dealer a reward (the profit) by making the purchase when its obvious the dealer is screwing the customer.

Tell me Joe...

What is "STUPID S---" about checking the car, IN ADVANCE, of buying it to make sure it has the options you bought the car for in the first place?

You can't answer those Joe.  All my points were valid but lets see how you dispute them:

1.  Buy locally so you can see what you're paying for and have YOUR MECHANIC check out the car in advance!

2.  When a dealer is obviously treating you poorly, and in this case it was obvious, you WALK OUT and don't be a DOORMAT and take it.  Neither this customer, nor YOU or ME are so worthless we need to accept being treated like s---!  The dealer needs US...we don't need them!

3.  If you have options in mind, make sure the car you are about to buy has them BEFORE you buy it.  COMMON SENSE!

4.  Read all paperwork and understand all paperwork BEFORE you sign it.  Make sure YOU understand it.  Don't ask the salesman what it says and then sign!

Joe, what's the problem with being a SMART CONSUMER?  You have some problem with that approach?  If this customer would have followed the guidelines above, he/she wouldn't have the problems they have now...in fact, they would have had the car they want and a car mechanically sound.

 YOUR TURN!

Bad Deal From The Beginning

Here's your direct quote:..."I would fly down there the next morning to pick it up".  Ever give thought to buying a used car locally so you and your mechanic could check it out IN ADVANCE?  And how to you agree on a price if you CAN'T SEE what you're buying?

Anyway, you went there and surprise, surprise they didn't do anything to the car and it was in worse shape than they originally described.  Since it was obvious what kind of people you were dealing with, why didn't you just walk out at that point?  Oh no, you REWARDED THEM for their dishonesty and guess what, they all probably laughed their a---s off after you left!  I can hear them now..."Hey Brandon, they came here and even though we lied to them, they bought the car anyway!  Yes David, perfect doormats!  Don't we like these people!"

Then INCREDIBLY...you say you wanted a tow package and as you described it, "one of the main reasons I bought it".  But, you didn't bother to check for this option BEFORE you bought it.  You checked AFTER you bought it and again surprise, surprise, its not there!

I see.  We're supposed to feel so sorry for you the victim, WHEN YOU HELPED THEM ALL THE WAY!

INCREDIBLE!!!!!
