I Edith R., am writing this letter on behalf of my parents, who are the ones that got scammed by this indivudual.

On July 29, 2016, my parents signed a contract with Jose D. Urbina, D/B/A KDB REMODELING & HANDYMAN SERVICES to demolish current garage and build a new cinder block garage for the amount of $24890. The agreement was that the garage would be complete within 4-6 weeks. My parents gave him a deposit of $6000.

On Tuesday, August 2, 2016, he had two men tearing down the garage with hammers and picks. The next couple of days they disposed of the garbage using black bags. On August 6, 2016, Jose asked for more money. My parents then gave him another $4000. On the following week Jose had his worker Cesar begin building a foundation wall. During that week Jose had asked for another $4000.

By this time my husband and I had stepped in. We spoke with Jose and told him he was not going to be given any more money until we saw progress in the project. We explained our expectations. He was upset and adamant that we give him more money. Since we refused, he said the project would take another 4 weeks to complete because he had no funds.

During the duration of the project Jose would not show up to work on my parents garage. He would send his workers with no material, hence the project would be halted. The only times he showed up was when he wanted more money.

My parents also noticed that the foundation wall was poorly done. They had two different contractors come out and analyze the wall. He gave a proposal on his recommendation and opinion. The two contractors had said based on their work experience the job had been poorly done, therefore, the foundation wall would have to be torn down and rebuilt.

On August 28th we asked Jose for a meeting. My bothers, my husband, my mother and I were present at the meeting. We had agreed to end the contract because we saw no progress and because of his poorly done work. We explained how we felt and he agreed to terminate the contract. We also explained to Jose that we wanted 70% of the money returned to my parents. These calculations were according to what we thought was fair.

Everything that was said verbally was also given to him in writing with my parents signature. The letter also explained that we expected the refund within 5 business days and if he failed to do so we'd make a complaint with the department of consumer services. He agreed and said he'd do some calculations on what he had spent on material. I asked him for a detailed bill including materials he had used and amount of money spent.

Jose had agreed to give us the information by Wednesday, August 31st. Wednesday came and we didn't hear from him. My husband called him and Jose said he'd return his call. From then on Jose has ignored all of our calls and texts.

 Since then, my parents have asked three contractors for opinions and proposals on the foundation wall. All of them agree that the wall must be torn down and rebuilt because it is very poorly done.  

I'd also like to add that we decided to take the initiative and report this man to as many organizations as we can to try and help my parents feel better. Their health has deteriorated and they have had many sleepless nights. This man thought that he could rip off two older people, but what he did not know was that they have children who love them very much and are willing to take those extra steps to defend their rights as human beings.

We wish we would have done intense research on this man before my parents gave him the job and money. if we would have done our homework and not relied on "recomendations" this probably would have never happened. After we looked him up, we found out that he has been arrested for child support and domestic battery.  Although when we searched his business it didn't come up at all. But once we searched his name we got a load of surprises.

Our mission is to get reimbursed and to make sure that Jose does not do this to anyone else ever again. We hope that by making these complaints public his name and business will come up when googled.
