In order to close an account you would need to sit down with a manager and go over all of the information including a closeout form. If you just withdrew the money the account wasn't closed and depending on which account you had there may have been a monthly maintenance fee. If your account was overdrawn it couldn't have been closed until the account was brought back to a positive. In this situation it sounds like the account was in the negative long enough for the account to actually charge off and be sent to collections. If that is the case, then your account was sent to collections which will stop you from opening another account while you have outstanding debt with key. the easy way to solve the problem is to pay off key bank or at least set up payment arrangements, however if your arrangements aren't fulfilled and you are able to open another account in the process they will close your account.

You made your own bed when you decided to ignore their notices, obviously mistakes do happen, and if you had gone into the bank and explained the situation, more than likely the teller would have been able to reverse any charges and you would never have been reported to chexsystems. At the very least you could have called the 800 number and let them know the situation. Just because they make a mistake doesn't mean they are out to get your money. It is a larger bank now than it was 20 years ago, and it stands to reason that you had resigned yourself to the opinion that they are a rip-off bank from your previous experiences, and therefore refused to even attempt to rectify the situation on your own. I'd say you got yourself into this particular mess, the bank may have broken the ground, but you kept on digging that hole deeper.
