Sounds like these Kmart employees are the same all over the country. A friend worked for Kmart and quit because he said there's no logic whatsoever there.

I work for Kmart in Ohio, and it is my understanding that our store policy reflects all store policies for all Kmart stores. If you have an UNOPENED game without receipt, you can a.) look it up via credit/debit card/check used, or b.) receive store credit for the lowest sale price the game has been in the last 90 days. I don't know who the *bleep* that manager thinks they are, but as an employee, I know that we do NOT accuse anyone of thievery or treat them badly. I would get ahold of the Kmart customer service line and report this incident, as well as explain to them that your friends and employer possibly shop at that store and could have overheard you being excused of thievery. That's slander, and a serious offense. Here is our customer service number. I'm sorry you were treated so horribly-- there is NO reason for that. 1-866-562-7848, from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. (CT) Monday - Sunday

to return an item to a store without a receipt. For the most part stores won't do it because they don't want people shoplifting items and returning them for refund. You probably won't get anywhere with K-Mart with your approach. I suggest one of 2 things. Either speak to the person who gave the gift and ask them if they purchased the item on their credit card. If so they should be able to show the date of purchase and the price so K-Mart would do the refund. Or simply put the item aside and re-gift it to some other child.
