Joe bought a TH-400 transmission from us and installed it himself more than a year after he purchased it. He called and asked if I remembered him, which I did. When he brought the transmission in, it had a disfunctional pump. I rebuild or replace the pump every time I rebuild a transmission, so when it left the shop the pump was good. I replaced the pump with a remanufactured one, even though the transmission was no longer covered by warranty, and the pump could have gone bad just from sitting for so long.
The transmission did not have a crack in the case when I sold it, or I wouldn't have sold it. If it had a crack, it happened either when he drove away with it, or when he installed it.
At that point in time he was a reputable automotive repair man and he took me to the Better Business Bureau, who sided with me.
We do our best to be honest and fair to the customer, but unfortunately it's a fact of life in this business that we regularly get blamed for problems that were not caused by us.
