I had locked my keys in my car when goin to a appointment at UT hospital. Come out and there they where. I have never had this happen to me before. And, honestly havent had my license long. Well, I looked on the internet via my phone and found Locksmith Knoxville. Now the link to the website said $19. So, I called. I also made sure to ask the man on the phone. "It will be $19 to unlock my door?" and he replied with "yes". Well the next thing I know someone else is calling my phone saying that he was coming to unlock my door. And that he would call me when he got to the hospital so he could find me. When he showed up He was is in a normal car, with letters that looked like tape on the door. But, I was so ready to be home that I over looked that. He gets out tall, lanky, clothes looked dirty, figured he's a working man. Writes down my liceense plate number. Didnt give me a estament.  Then hands me a receipt book and says just sign here. Now on my end, I didnt really look it over good like i said i was ready to get out of there. So, I signed. payed by debt card. And he unlocked my door. Gave me a copy of the reciept and went on his way and i got in and put it in my purse. Got home was talkin to my husband about it and he said wait what was the $80 dollars for. So, I called the number that i had called before. And got a totally different person. He was rude, and hateful and was treating me like i was stupid. I told him that i was told $19 dollars for the door to be unlock and got charged $99. What was the $80 for. And he began to explain that it was for unlocking the door and the $19 was for the service call. I said so your telling me that you got paid $19 dollars for saying hello, what's the address, and i will send someone right out. And he got paid $80 dollars for the 5 seconds that it took to unlock my car door. Really. He said yes if that is what it says that that is what it is for. He said I will tell my boss of this. And i said well let me talk to him. And his reply was stone silence, because he hung up on me. So, please dont ever use this company. Because now I am out $80 that I didnt have in the first place to spend. Not including all the greif that I have put up with today because of it.

Locksmith scam

What happened to you is the typical locksmith scam.  They have boiler rooms around the country to answer these calls. The locksmith "company" does exactly as you describe - charge huge fees over the quoted amount.

Look up the locksmith scam alert by the FTC.

Get your own locksmith, a local one, and program their name and number into your phone so you know you are calling someone legitimate.  Be careful, because the scammers spoof local numbers and local addresses in order to get you to call them so you need to do some actual legwork to determine a 'real local locksmith' from the bogus scammer locksmiths advertising online.  I have seen those bogus locksmith ads using other peoples home addresses! It is a real issue across the country.

Don't feel bad over it. Get back by spreading the word (like you have).

Or get AAA where locksmith services are included - for much less, plus you get other services. In my opinion it is well worth the peace of mind of having AAA vet the locksmith company.

File a complaint with the FTC and with CFPB.  If they get enough complaints they will do something other than post an alert - I hope.
