First let me say that as the Magic Jack sells in several different stores or even if you can only order it on line, I would buy a second MJ if my first MJ was failing and MJ did not want to exchange it. I would make sure to pay using a credit card as well as by Pay Pal so that I would have to different companies fighting for me to get my money back by doing a charge back if MJ fails to refund my money when I sent back the defected MJ with in the 30 day trial period. This is how I have handled other products where the company failed to stand behind their product. But this is why I originally wrote here today. I have purchased a Magic Jack over 8 months ago and it has served its purpose. I have had only one consistent problem. This problem is that every two to three weeks, my MJ loses its connection which I have no phone service when I turn my computer on in the morning to start my day. I have to go through a process their tech support walked me through which can take 10 minutes to 30 minutes to finally get the MJ back up and running. It does take 30 minutes to an hour and a half to get in contact with their tech support division and this is including you getting the MJ back up and running. But I suggest that the first time that you have to contact their tech support for this problem that you copy and save their whole explanation of how to get the MJ back up and running. Since the only way you can contact their tech support is through the net where you type your conversation instead of talking to someone, you will have the whole conversation typed out after you are done fixing the MJ. This is when you should copy the whole conversation and paste it in a new file and then save it on your computer so that you can actually go through the whole procedure to get your MJ back up and running by yourself the next time your MJ fails to connect. It is the same procedure to get it back up and running every time. I must admit that this is a little inconvenient but once again for the cost, I would rather go through this process with MJ instead of paying $25 plus each month just to have a phone in my house. The connection sometimes is a little ruff also but that is 1 out of every 15 calls. I have read several of these complaints here on Ripoff and they are valid complaints but I felt that it was important to at least explain that the MJ does work in most cases and even though it has s few corks, it is still a great bargain for the cost of the item. Depending on the cell phone service plans in your area, it might be best to pay for a cell phone instead of having a land line, Vonage, Skype, and even Magic Jack. But if you need a phone service other than a cell, I still feel that Magic Jack is a great deal due to the cost and regardless of all these other complaints. People here were also complaining that when you turn off your computer that there is no phone service with MJ and this is true. If you are like me and the other 90% of people that I know where they also have a cell phone as well as a MJ, land line, Vonage, or Skype you can forward the MJ calls right before you turn off your computer into your cell phone or other phone service. It is only a few clicks on MJ's website and you can instantly forward your MJ calls to your cell and in the morning when you turn your computer back on you can switch off the forwarding function so that your MJ phone will ring with just a few more clicks on the MJ website. We have bought one MJ for our house 8 months ago and we are buying another one today because we have a business located in another area code which is considered long distance. When ever we have our biz. phone lines forwarded into our cell phones because we are out of the office, we have been billed $20 to $40 dollars depending on the amount of calls every month by the phone company because our biz. calls are being forwarded into a long distance cell phone number. Due to the different area codes between our Biz. lines and our cell phones and when we get this new MJ, we are going to assign the MJ the same area code as our business lines so we can forward our biz. calls to the MJ when we are out of the office and then we will set the MJ up to forward all the calls into our cell phones which will now be a free call. NO MORE LONG DISTANCE CHARGES WITH MJ!! Buying a MJ and using it the way I just described, we are going to save our business at least $250 to $480 a year. The computer will never have to be on after the initial set up in order to set the MJ up to forward all the calls it receives into our cell phones. If you clearly think on how to successfully use the MJ to your advantage, it can save you or your biz. hundreds of dollars each year and you can avoid many of the problems listed here on this Rip Off web site. I just felt that it was very important for me to log on and express my positive usage of the MJ as well as some of the problems the MJ can cause but over all for the cost of the product, it is a steal/bargain!! a satisfied customer
