I recently moved from Tucson to Phoenix and needed to purchase a mattress for my apartment. Having a low to medium income I went searching for a for name brand mattress at a "discount outlet".

The store is packed with "name-brand" mattresses like Serta, Simmons and Sealy..(the 3 SSS's-looks like 3 snakes to me)... starting out at about $500 and up. I immediately told the salesman that I needed a soft, but firm mattress that would not sag, bow, or dip and that would stay true to its original form after I've slept on it-(because you'll never know until you've slept on it awhile).

I specifically requested this style of mattress because I was in a serious car wreck in which my spine was injured, and that I had purchased a cheaper mattress previously and it bowed, sagged and dipped & yes, I did have the apropriate frame w/ the middle bar for queen size. I mentioned to him I was ready to get what I pay for and that I could spend around $700.

He recomended a Beauty Rest which was around $500 and stated that it would be good for me. It did feel pretty comfy but it didnt feel firm enough, so I tried a SERTA firm pillowtop which was $100 more. He told me that IT was a good mattress as well and I laid on IT and the BR back and forth. I decided to take the SERTA and because it was just firmer and felt better with my back. I paid CA$H and he snatched the money quickly and tore off a receipt that said NO REFUNDS!-1 time comfort exchange only!

(and there were no NO REFUND signs posted anywhere on the wall) So I addressed this issue and and asked what if, for some odd reason, this mattress dips out? He confidently replied that I should have NO PROBLEM and that they would exchange it until I was satisfied.

Long story short(because I could probably publish a book), I started encountering the very problems I was dreading, after just a couple weeks, EXTREME BACK/NECK PAIN-it felt like I was sitting in a horse saddle, and lying back. He tried to convince me to WAIT IT OUT and that it would BREAK IN. I refused & demanded an exchange for a reg SERTA-no pillow top and It WAS WORSE. I has loss of feeling in my legs. After being denied another exchange or refund from s.m. and his GM, I told salesman that I would call a news station to expose them, I recieved a call a few days later from a diff s.m.(senior), and he told me he would "properly evaluate my sleeping posture to recommend the best bed for me-that my orig s.m. had not". I agreed to take more time out of my schedule & meet him @ the SCOTTSDALE location, and he recommended a higher costing FIRM-PLUSH SIMMONS BEAUTYREST. So I agreed to pay $300 more of my hard earned $$ and go w/ his recommendation and he looked me in the eye and told me I should have NO MORE PROBLEMS(I even had to pay $40 extra to get a delivery that would fit my work schedule).

Well GUESS WHAT?? YES, the same thing all over again. So I have lodged a complaint w/ the BBB and am hoping this will result in a refund because I am out $1053.00, stuck with a posture destroying mattress, and do not have the money or time to take off of work to get a lawyer. So moral of the story, Mattress Outlaws will gun you down and rob you dry!!

I've read on plenty of websites this same issue with mattress places. It seems to me that we as consumers go into it without the proper know how. When I bought my mattress last year the sales person told me I might have some pain in the first few weeks while I adjusted... I was like "What now?" I'm already in pain and you expect me to be fine with being in more pain? After a few weeks I noticed how comfortable I was... so exciting I know. I found out after looked at some sites and talking with friends that everyone goes though this. Your situation a little worse but if we pick the wrong mattress to start with then we spend all that time exchanging beds and having to again break in that one too. They should have told you before you paid that there were no refunds that was shady. Mattress shopping is so not what I would choose to do, but it's one of those necessary evils we have to endure. If a company is pretty large and have really great guarantees, along with a big selection I would go with that type of company vs where you purchased. I leared that with my fridge... mom and pop type place... great prices my fridge was a couple hundred less then it would have been at a department store... but the after and the way I was treated when something went wrong??? Holy crap! Hope you now have something nice to sleep on! :)
