Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I took my 13 year old  god daughter to get her hair braided at this African Braiding shop called Maya African Hair Braiding in New London CT on 5/24/12. This was the most Horrible salon experience ever, going into this place! May I remind you that I've never been to this place before in my life, until I went in there that day.  I did not know what types of hair styles that they did there or what any of the options were, so therefore my god daughter and I started  looking through the many hair braiding books and magazines that were there so we could choose a suitable hair style for a 13 year old, and a style that will not make my god daughter hair fall out. I presently have custody of my god daughter but I still communicate with her mother, so after we picked out the hair style that we wanted, I called my god daughter mother to let her know what type of hair style her daughter was about to get. During the conversation with my god daughter mother, the owner was being highly rude telling me that she did not want to be there all day she has things she have to go do. (In enough words...she was telling me to get off the phone without saying it!)  My instincts at that point was to walk out and leave immediately because, I'm very big when it comes to customer service and being treated like a human being , with respect but instead I brushed it off and stayed.

I paid $ 170 bucks up front for the service and I left to go home while the 2 lady's there were braiding my god daughter hair. Before I left I told the owner and the other lady who was helping with the hair braiding exactly how I wanted my god daughter hair. Just to make sure their were no language barrier...I repeated myself once again and gave exact details of how I wanted my god daughter hair done. I stated that I wanted her hair twisted to her shoulder's and to add a few streaks of brown in my god daughter hair. They both said ok and then I left to go home. When I returned back to the African hair braiding shop to pick up my god daughter, I noticed that she had knots at the end of her hair. It looked tackey and ghetto! I expressed my concerns to the lady about it and she asked me if I wanted her to take out the knots. I responded very politely and told her no because, if she took out the knots, then my god daughter hair would not stay in. I told the owner that they should of done it right the first time, and burn the ends or put the hair in hot water like any other braiding shops do! The owner was once again rude to me and stated ...."You should of been here the whole time, and not left your god daughter here."

At that point....in my mind I was thinking WTF! Come on now...what is wrong with this lady! I ignored her and went to my car and that's when I realized that there were no brown streaks in my god daughter hair, none what so ever. I went back to the braiding shop in front of my hubby, god daughter and asked the owner, why was there no brown streaks in my god daughter hair none what so ever, I told her that I clearly stated what I wanted her to do. The owner then began to be very irate and argumentive with me, telling me that my god daughter told her that she did not want the streaks so therefore she did not put any streaks of brown in her hair. At that point I felt my PTSD starting to kick in from while being in the service, but I still held it together and was still talking to this rude lady in an adult mannor. 10 points for me yeah!  Then I told the lady, who was the adult! my god daughter is only 13 and she does not run nothing! I told her that I did not care what my god daughter told her....What did I tell you!I clearly told you what I wanted her to get. I asked her for a refund or at least part of a refund and then she told me to leave and I told her that she was lacking customer service skills and she needed to take a class or two in how to treat your customer's. The lady then told me to Never come back, and I told her that I did not care because I wasn't planning on ever coming back anyways! And I told her that I was going to let every one know about her Ripoff hair braiding shop and her nasty rude attitude.

This lady will clearly take your money and not provide the service you ask for and what makes it so sad is that she does not care! (Warning...Do Not Pay This Lady Up Front!) Furthermore, I was told that the owner was an illegal immagrant and her workers are illegal as well and they work under the table so I went on the Better business Bureau to see if the business even exsisted and what the rating was but Maya African Brading was not listed with them. I'm trying to save Everyone else from the headache and drama of making the same mistake I did... and that was going to these people and getting ripoff $170 bucks or more for a style a 15 year old prob could do with their eyes closed and then to top it off...it's not what you asked for.
