Received automated phone call every 2 weeks dunning for a collection. Response code selections included pay-by-phone. When I selected the response code to talk to someone, the phone hung up.

Finally got someone on the phone a number of calls later. They asked me to confirm my SS#. I refused, and asked what this was in reference to. They said they couldn't talk to me unless they verified my SS#, and then hung up.

I received a written notification a number of weeks later. The notice said they were collecting on a debt originating at Chase Manhattan Bank. I called, and verified the last 4 numbers of my SS so someone would speak to me. They indicated that this was a credit card debt from Chase Manhattan Bank from 1984. I never had a Chase card in 1984. As a matter of fact, I have never had a personal Chase credit card, ever.

I realize this is some sort of scam, but I am very concerned that something might hit my credit report, and either compromise my good credit, or cost me huge chunks of time and aggravation to straighten out.

Do not ever call these scumbags, never never give them your SS number not even the last 4 digits or any personal information, if they keep calling tell them to quit now, contact your local attorney general. Tell them they must contact you by mail, respend back to them by regestered US mail receipt requested. Keep good records of all contacts. Look back on this web site for excellent suggestions of what to do with these bottom feeders. Good Luck!!!! John
