Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I received a letter last week from MCM offering a settlement for a debt from a CITIBANK account they had apparently purchased. It seems that the world and his brother have received similar fraudulent letters. I called the number on the letter and some lady told me it was for a debt for something to do with Citibank from 1987!!!! She actually had all my SS# and address details correct but I have no knowledge of any debt with Citibank or anyone else from that time .... 21 years is well past the statute of limitations. As far as I know, I don't have any outstanding debts ... but who the hell keeps records for 21 years.

I found hundreds of web sites and blogs with damning information on this company and so I sent them a validation letter, pointing out the statute of limitations. In addition, according to other NY victims, MCM does not have a license to operate in NY. I also left messages for Robin Ross Pruitt, their House Attorney and Angelique Purvis, their Consumer Relations Manager. I also filed an on-line complaint with the FTC.

According to other blogs, MCM are pitbulls. They DON'T respond to validation requests and then send out court notices within a few days of sending their letters. If you turn up in court, they don't send representatives. If you don't, apparently, you're the one who loses out. I cannot believe the FTC allows them to operates and the courts waste their time and money allowing this company to bring up malicious suits. These people are time wasting crooks and the current system allows these people to operate. Advice is to take MCM to court .... but who has the time or money to do this. Any other advice as to how to get these thugs off my back, I'd welcome. Is it best to just throw away their letter and ignore it?

Let them sue you! It's EASY MONEY for YOU if they do!

Its called damages from a frivolous lawsuit. This is worth money to you. Free money! As soon as you dispute the debt and demand validation, all collections activity must cease until such validation is provided. This includes lawsuits. However, since you already notified them that this "debt" is past SOL, they should know they cannot sue on it. If they do, that is the definition of FRIVOLOUS LAWSUIT! Go to FTC.gov and file an online report against them for the unethical / illegal collections activity. Have fun with these crackheads. Don't get mad, GET PAID!!

Even if this debt is yours, it is WAY past the statute of limitations and the seven year reporting cycle on credit reports. Per the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, it is your right to send them a "Cease Communications" letter. Per the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act they must stop collection activity. Send them a certified letter + return receipt stating: Per the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, I am requesting written validation of this alleged debt and that said alleged debt is within the statute of limitations. Per the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Cease all verbal/phone contact with me. ======================================== DO NOT sign your name on this letter, they might pull off your signature and attach it to forged documents. Very Important*** If you are served papers about a court date from them, DO NOT under any circumstances whatsoever be a "no show" in court. These people like to play the "default judgment" game...where they file a bunch of lawsuits on ancient debt like yours and keep their fingers crossed that you don't show up on the appointed day in court. No show = default judgment for them and wage garnishment for you...even if this debt is not yours or if it's outside the statue of limitations. Be sure to send the debt validation request via certified mail + return receipt. This will come in handy in case they file one of these frivolous suits. Check out budhibbs.com for a lot of good info. Good luck! John in Louisville
