On (12/09/2007) my wife and I went to MODIA to look at large screen TV's. We meet with Randy Shannon whom I had spoken with earlier that day.

We had already done some research and kind of knew what we wanted; we were looking for 60" plasma. He showed us a 58" Panasonic. Since we already owned the 50" version, it seemed like a good fit. However I hesitated due to price. Randy showed me their ad and told me "there was no way anyone would bet their price". I asked Randy if they matched price and he said "yes".

With the "price guarantee" and Randy's assurance that no one would be able to beat their price, we bought the TV paying $3799.00.

On the 18th I had to go to Fry's to purchase a mother board for my son's computer and while there my wife and I started to look at sound systems. Since I was in the area I went to look at their 58" Panasonic's price. It was $3399.00 and the sale ended that night. Well, I saw a $400 refund in my future. Little did I know how it worked? I called Modia the next day and was told that Randy would not be back into the office until Thursday and that Modia did not have a written price match guarantee, but the sales person did have the option to "work with their customers".

Well I called back Thursday and got Randy on the phone. He very quickly explained their guarantee was for their store only. If they lowered their price within 30 days, they would pay the difference. Since he felt that he did not clearly explain to me their price matching and there was a misunderstanding he ask me the price I saw at the other store and that he might be able to work with me. I told him the price and he looked up his list price and told me he would not be able to match the price. He didnt even make any type of offer. That ended the call.

However, since randy had earlier agreed to send me a copy of my receipt I called back to make sure he was still willing. He said yes and that he called fry's and their price was $4400.00. I tried to explain the price I saw was for the 18th and the sale ended the night I was there. He said that he was not going to debate me and I explained to him I just wanted to make sure he followed thru with his commitment to email me the receipt. Since then I have also confirmed that I could get the warranty information from his store.

Here is my suggestion to folks that may shop at Modia in Austin, Go to fry's first and check out their prices. At least for this TV there was a great price that DID beat Modia.

Ask them if the match price of other electronic store in the area, if they say YES, get it in writing or some written proof like an add that shows it.

Update: on 01/01/08 I was again at fry's, this time the TV was $3099.00

I confirm the price I went to the Austin American Statesman and downloaded those ads

Misinterpetation of price match vs price guarantee

Unfortunately there seems to be a misunderstanding of "price matching" vs "price guarantee". With the ever changing price movements of video products there are no price guarantees against history pricing. We match legitimate and verifiable current prices, on in-stock products, from authorized dealers of said products at the time of purchase only. We do not guarantee the price in any fashion beyond that point. Mr. Shannon in no way misrepresented this fact. Phillip himself states that this was over a week after the purchase and that once the sale was over at Fry's they returned the set price to $4,400.00; well above the 3,799.00 he purchased his set for. They may have lowered the price even more now due to market conditions, inventory levels, maufactuer incentives and/or upcoming replacement model arrivals. With the fast pace of technology, price erosion will continue on certain products types and models, sometimes very rapidly and without notice. We work diligently to keep up with this mass of data and set our prices accordingly. I do agree with Philip, that you should shop all over for the best price and then come to MODIA to make your purchase. We will at that time match any legitimate, verifiable price from authorized dealers that you provide us. At that time our knowledgeable design consultants will assure that you are purchasing the most beneficial product for your application and lifestyle. Note: MODIA no longer provides any price guarantees on video products we sell for any period of time after purchase. Ron
