I fell into the same trap as alot of other people. Monitronics contract will auto renew at the end of its term, with no communications to the costumer that this will happen. I tried to end my contract two weeks prior to the end of its term. I was told I missed the deadline by two weeks (30 day notice) and I have to do so in writing.

Monitronics will still insist on written permission to cease monitoring an account for customer protection. All customers who have completed the initial term of their contract will be allowed to cancel their service. Please contact the Executive Response Team at 800-447-9239, extension 2130.

The auto renewal portion of this companies contract terms seems to be the most popular reason for dissatisfaction with the company. There is a very simple way to avoid this. The contract actually specifies that the cancellation letter must be received at least 90 days prior to the end of the initial or any renewal term(This is actually in 10pt font size). They actually give a lot of time when it comes to this. They actually give you an additional 60 days(which they really do not have to do). The way to avoid the renewal is to send in the reqest for cancellation well before it is due in the office(not write it on the day it is due or call in trying to cancel over the phone, because it doesn't work that way). By the way, the Dallas address is the one that is on the alarm monitoring portion of the agreement that you originally signed. this is the address that is to be used for correspondance. The next step is to actually follow up. Things get lost in the mail all the time. Sometimes it take up to 2 weeks for mail to actually get to it's destination for some reason. But the point is follow up. make sure that the company gets your cancellation letter at the proper address. It seems that having to call a few times to make sure that your letter is on file would be just a little bit less frustrating than paying for an additional year. The truth of the matter is that we need to read what we are signing before we sign it. If anything looks wrong there is a 72 hour addendum or right to cancel. this give you 72 hours to get a second opinion and cancel the signed contract if it isn't what you thought you were signing. One more tip... any offers that are offered to you for signing a contract... Make sure that you get them in writing. Once that person leaves, it is your word againt his.
