I had a blockage in my main sewer line---demonstrated by raw sewage backing up in my bathtub and the sink emptying into the bathtub. I called Mr.Rooter to come out and clean out the main sewer line.

The technician---Harry came out and cleaned out the sewer from the clean out in the driveway---which did not solve the problem. He then opened the pee trap under the kitchen sink and cleaned that out with the routing machine---the bathtub emptied---because Harry had broken the trap at the washing machine drain under the house and raw sewage was free flowing under the house. Harry wanted to charge me an additional $325 to use the camera to look into the sewer pipe---he did and he said that it was for free because I was going to hire him to fix it on the side... (behind the company's back as it were)...

Harry said that the main sewer was crushed where it met the house and needed replacing---$2600 to dig it up outside---he wanted $1300 up front cash to start. My sister advised another estimate---as it did need fixing right away with the sewage poruing under the house.Harry wanted to fix it on the side outside of the Mr. Rooter Company for cash. He charged me $345 for all this and did not fix it at all....

I called another plumbing company---who took the toilet up and routed out the clog----and then fixed the broken trap at the washing machine---the sewer line was not crushed at all but stopped up....the camera view of the sewer line was free from the 2nd company...This 2nd company charged $635 but fixed the whole thing....

The second company said that the sewer line could be completely replaced without too much digging for $4500---no money up front and they have financing---now that is a reputable company....

I stopped payment on the check for Mr. Rooter and I have the trap harry tore up with the router---plus a statement from the 2nd plumbing company that this is what happened...

Dont use Mr. Rooter---they are not honest----

Your scenario of the hospital is not at all a good comparison. As a customer you have the right to get several estimates and go with the company that you feel comfortable with, that's your right! But to slander the company and accuse all employees that work for the company are rip offs because of one particular employee is bad on your part! In addition, when you are faced with a big job of repiping a line, the fees involved are high and most companies ask for at least 10% deposit prior to work starting. That's a standard practice in the construction field. How pay for the deposit is up to you. I am curious how Harry was able to camera the line when it was clogged. You cannot operate the video camera equipment until the line is cleared of any obstructions. Plus, when using the camera equipment it gives the customer the opportunity to view the broken line for reassurance that the work does need to be done. Did you view the results from both companies? In most companies the Service Manager is a technician too, so to receive a call back is a waiting game. It's most effective to ask for the Office Manager or the Owner for results, did you call for either? I just think you are being completely unfair to a professional company that may charge more than other plumbers but that's mostly due to the insurances and the cost of business. By the way did you verify that the "other plumber" was licensed with your state contracting license board? It's illegal for any contractor to be doing business without a proper license, bond and workman's comp! By the way, you stopped payment on the check for work provided. I think you are the rip off, receiving services and not paying for them. P-traps break all the time because when a plumber takes the p-trap apart to have access to your line they break, they are cheap plastic piping made for a single use. Plumbing is not a lifetime guarantee, you will always be updating and fixing it. Also, a line can be so conjested that one company can snake for hours and not relieve the line then be followed by another company that will clear the line in 10 minutes. Point in hand, you got the work done from another company that satisfied you, you even say that it's in the past and what was done, was done. I just think it's sleezy on your part to report them as a rip off when YOU HAVEN"T EVEN PAID THEM! How can you sleep at night?

You know I was thinking---If I went into a patient's room (as I am a nurse) and the patient said "I have terrible chest pain and I am scared---can you help me??" And I said "Yes, but it I will have to charge you $1,000 cash right now in addition to the enourmous rate the hospital is charging--- and I have not idea that you are having a heart attack---btu you need to pay me th money anyway....so the patient says "Well, let me think about it".... and then calls my supervisor and reports me---then asks for another nurse to take care of him... And that is what happened with Harry---I said "I will think about it"--and reported him to his boss---with no reply from the boss to this day....I just got another plumber--- It is an employee's job to be honest with his boss and customers..... And when a woman is alone on the driveway with a huge man that is the plumber she might say " I will think about it" and turn right around and report the plumber to the company---to protect herself.....with no intention of hiring anyone on a side job from the company that came out to do the repair.... I am laughing because Mr. Rooter plumbing is getting not one dime from this woman...they can fire Harry for it...

I did not accept the offer from Harry I told Harry I would think about it to get rid of him ---I called his boss twice to tell him about Harry's offer---and that boss did not call me back----I dont need new sewer anyway---the camera view showed this---it was just stopped up.... I NEVER pay cash up front to anyone---this is an invitation to get someone to walk off with my hard earned money.... Harry represents his company---as I represent mine---and if you and I should be able to expect employees to represent the company in an honorable manner--as I represent mine in an honorable way---so if you need me when I am at work I do the best I can for you---even when you have no idea what you need I do what I can anyway... Harry should not be offering to do jobs on the side---and since he represents his employer they are all dishonest The second company did a great job---and I appreciate it--i dont need financing anyway--I have cash to pay that sort of bil.... It doesnt matter anyway---it is over now....

Harry is the problem, not Mr. Rooter

I agree with Robert's comment. We own a plumbing company and it is unethical and illegal (per our employee handbook) for an employee to do side work. Mr. Rooter pays for the advertisement, the phone bill for you to call them, the phone representative to take your call, the computer progam to log you, the rent for office space, gas to go to your home, the contracts to write up your work order, pays the service technician and they get tagged as the rip off? Harry is the rip off and should be reported to the company. His actions of contracting side work is a form of embezzlement! If you would have called the office and spoke with a manager I'm sure they would have worked with you since Harry is a poor example of the way the company does business. Did you ask if they offer financing? most companies offer financing and since Mr. Rooter is a franchise I am sure they have a program to offer. Just remember, a company hires an employee in good faith that they will represent the company in a good, fair, honest fashion. So don't always punish a company because they had the misfortune of hiring the wrong person.

You blame Mr Rooter for being dishonest, while it seems the only two people involved in any disreputable behavior are YOU and Harry. He is paid by Mr Rooter to work for Mr Rooter. You accepted his offer to STEAL from his employer by doing the work on the side. That makes you just as guilty as he is for being dishonest. Amazing. It looks like you should be complaining about Harry and yourself for conspiring against Mr Rooter, a company that apparently only made the mistakes of hiring Harry in the first place, and sending him to your house in the second. I especially like your theory that the 2nd plumbing company is honest and reputable because they offer financing.
